Hello Fellas,
I am swapping my decklid on my 70 Monte and I want to remove my old lock cylinder and put it on the new lid. I have been advised that there is is a clip to get it out I have been trying to get it out but no luck. In the Fisher Body manual they insrtuct to drill out a rivet. Anyone have any suggestions?

I don't remember exactly, but I do believe the clip can be seen under the lock in the "jamb" area when the lid is up. Drill the rivit out and pull down on the clip. They get stuck sometimes and can be a bear. Just understand that this clip is a flat piece of metal that has a large hole in it (or it is "U" shaped). The bottom of the "hole" is smaller than the top. The lock has a slot on each side that the clip slides into. So you have to pull the clip down till the narrow part of the clip is below the lock. This allows the lock to be removed. Then you push up the clip to retain the "new" lock.

Thanks MARTINSR, I will try it out. Maybe it is worth just leaving the lock cylinder in the new lid and making a copy of the key. I could just mask it off when I do the bodywork. Anyone leave this on when stripping and repainting their car?

Monte, just remove the lock. It really is easy, the little pop rivit comes out in a snap. Just drill it with an 1/8" bit. Then when you put the "new/old" lock back in use a small trim screw like GM should have. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

MonteMan removing the lock cylinder is not that hard around a 5 minute deal if that. Many times instead of being held in place with a rivet its a small screw, making it much easier to remove. One thing I will add to MARTINSR method of removing that U clip, its best to grip it with a vise grip. Keep it mind its probably never been removed before and little stuck. So a good grip will be needed.
As for masking it off please dont. It will be hard to remove the paint around the cylinder, and sand any primer. Its not worth the time to leave it in there when paint is flaking off around it because you didnt sand it well enough. Plus you will be able to see a tell tale tape line around the lock, and nothing bugs me more then tape lines around objects that take less time to remove then mask them.
