Any advice on where to do my bumper-shopping?

My '69 is a daily driver, but I do show it too. I'm looking for a presentable (not necessarily perfect) finish that will hold up to 8000 miles/year for many years in the +/- $200 each price range.

Good used bumpers are perfectly acceptable too, as long as any dings and scrapes aren't too noticeable.

Email me if you want to give advice on companies to stay away from.

Derek, Ive had real good luck with northstar bumper. The chrome shop is in Brainard Minn. Had my 70 bumpers done there for around 350 a piece turn around time was about 3 weeks if i remember right. Another chrome shop would be tricity out of Tenn, seen a few of their bumpers and they as well look great.

As for aftermarket's the only ones Ive seen in person are the goodmark bumpers. They look good not great but would be ok for a daily driver. Nice chrome but if you look close you can see the sand straches in the chrome. Not too bad for 160 bucks...Eric

i preffer to have rechromed/straightened bumper cost just a little more but the metal is better quality (thicker) and i also believe the fit is better especially if you send them your original bumpers. they will straighten and rechrome them i also think the chrome is better quality. i used bumper boyz www.bumperboyz.com (http://www.bumperboyz.com)
they fit perfect and the chrome was amazing

Derek,

Second the recommendation for Northstar. They did both for my GS and they turned out beautifully. They used to have an office and/or distribution facility in north Mpls, but I think it's still there. I drove up and dropped them off.

I've used BumperBoyz ONCE on both bumpers. Chrome was gone after a year and a half! Ask around. I've used Tri-City plating since then. Lifetime warranty and looks great. There were actual arguments at their Carlisle AND Englishtown tents over their workmanship (or lack of).

i used Northstar for my 70 Z, they turned out nice. 1-800-422-1995

im using Tri City for the Chevelle, should have them back by the end of January.
$130 dollars cheaper then Northstar.
Northstar would not match the price.

I also had a bad experience with the bumperboyz. I had them do the bumpers and some other small things (mirrors, tail light and back-up light bezels) for another car. When the stuff came back the first time, the bumpers didn't quite fit right and worse yet, the small stuff was only "mexi-chromed" by spray painting it silver! Obviously, I sent all the stuff back to be done right before I would pay them for it. I doubt if I would ever send them anything again.

Stay away from bumperboyz, their quality is not there. Tri-city in Tenn. as previously mentioned has a no questions asked lifetime guarentee. I bought 2 bumpers from them at Carlisle for my 66. I thought I would save 50 bucks and bought a blem rear bumper to go with a rechromed frt. bumper. I was installing my bumper guards on rear and left side didnt quite fit. So I called them and they said no problem, send bumper back with mybumper guards, which need rechromed, and they will fit to another bumper to make sure they fit. They charge 90 bucks to rechrome rear bumper guards. I pay difference for a non blem bumper and everybody is happy. Maybe I will get my original rear bumper back! Bumper boys were drinking beer and didnt seem to have time to talk to me! I like beer to, but business is first.

Am a frequent user of Keystone (Northstar). Chrome Quality has been consistant, repair is usually good. They will be doing the bars for my 66 Elky. If they start out with something that is not destroyed, they usually produce a good product. Before Keystone owned Northstar, I think that the Northstar operation, produced a better, more consistant product than Keystone did. I hope they continue to maintain the quality of the Northstar operation in Brainerd Mn. Karl

Superior Plating in Houston rechromes bumpers for just under $200, last time I checked.

We used Chrome Zone here in Las Vegas to straighten and rechrome our rear bumper.

$185.00, but we feel the price was lower due to their polishing all of our stainless trim and rechroming the other pieces.

"SUPER!"

Now if we can find a decent front bumper to have rechromed.

Anyone have one for sale?
