: Tin/Lead Update...

I got the tin kit from Eastwood today and I've started to use it. It's kinda difficult to use as expected, the lead wants to run when heated so there's a fine balance of heat and upward movement. I wish I could turn the car on it's side and just let it puddle!

Also, this car had a vinyl top and I'm not putting vinyl back on. I've always thought the factory used lead on the sail seam but this had putty, I grinded it out and there sure is a lot of space that's going to need a lot of buildup of lead. Did they not lead this because it was a vinyl top?

Does anyone know were to get lead rods cheaper then eastwood?

I sure hope I have the skills to complete this project!

I have never seen anything but lead in the quarter to roof seam. I wounder if the top had ever been replaced before and those areas had work done to them before?

For your lead contact a local "quality" auto paint supply store. They usually only sell to body shops but you should be able to walk in and get what you need over the counter.

Our '72 Lemans Sport with the original vinyl top had the same filler in the roof seam.

Most vinyl top cars had epoxy in the seams instead of lead.

That's too bad vinyl tops got filler, it sure adds to the work of removing the vinyl!

Thanks,

The current Sears "The Auto Shop" catalog has the body solder sticks. One quarter pound stick goes for $1.99 and 40 or more at $1.49 each. Also, until 12/21, 10% off everything in the catalog.

Thats funny,I took the half top(landau) off a friends 78 Monte and it had the yellow epoxy stuff in it.Maybe it varied from plant to plant.Or maybe yours was given the top at the last minute.I know some dealers added vinyl tops after taking delivery of the car.

The Sear Auto Shop catalog is exactly the same as the Eastwood catalog. I happen to get both. Can be nice to use your sears card for supplies though.

I took the vinyl off my '72 that was built in KC. It/has lead filler.

What is the lead/tin ratio in Eastwood's lead sticks? The more lead, the better up to 80-90%. That 80-90% is hard to find these days.

Jimmpy P, Eastwood's lead is 70/30.
