The retainer needs to be pushed down from the inside and not pried from the bottom lip. The bottom lip will often break if you pry on it. Retainers are available aftermarket if it breaks. Wonder how I know all this?

do it like the previous owner of my 70 ss. get a stinkn tire tool from where i dont know. and beat the everloving crap out of the surrounding area. now grab a big hammer and place tire iron against it and give a hard lick to the tire iron. now you have tought that thing a lesson.

pried it out with 2 small pry bars (harbor freight) was real stubborn and nothing got screwed up. must have been somewhat rusted into place maybe. made a healthy noise when it popped loose.
