I would like to have my steering column rebuilt. I talked too a person at Steering Columns Galore in New York. He wanted 200 plus parts for rebuilding the column. I plan on sending the column there for rebuild. Anyone have any recomendations or suggestions. My first choice was a person named Bob Chandler in Covina California who was in an article I read about Chevelle steering column restoration but the telephone number was no longer in service. It was in a old magazine.

Don't hold me to this, as I'm going on memory here. While it's not advertised, I think I remember a tech from Flaming River steering columns saying they could/would rebuild a column for you? It wouldn't hurt to ask?

I had mine done by a small outfit in Idaho called Snake River steering columns, but I can't find them now.

If you have a club near you, there's a chance that a local guy rebuilt his and may assist?

Seems like there's not as many places doing this now, and I know that place in New York is not cheap.

any old body man should be able to rebuild it for u ..as they had to all the time when the car was stolen (unless it's before the locking ones) but still should beable to do it for ya.

FWIW I have purchased 2 steering columns from Steering Columns Galore and was very happy with both. I bought them for $279. each complete.

Hey Cody, I had my column rebuilt by Bob Chandler. He does excellent work! I have an advantage as I live in CA so I got to drop of my column at the Pomona swap meet and picked it up at his shop when it was done. Not sure what phone # you have, but his # is 626 915-5078.

Why are you having it rebuilt? To repair it, or to have it repainted.
Most lose columns are the 4 lose bolts inside that hold the top on the tube. True for all the GM ones I have fix from '55-93 (I haven't worked on '94 and newer column yet) after you have the wheel removed with a puller ($5.00) you only need a compressor ($8.00) to remove the c-clip, you will need to make or buy a tilt pivot pin puller for the tilt columns ($10.00) Other then that it is simple, most manuals have a blow up of columns, or just remember what order you removed each part, or a piece tape with a # on it.
While it's apart you can repaint it.
If you can remove the column from the car and replace it, you car rebuild it!
What parts do you need to fix it? What does it do?

My two cents worth! Pat

I just went to my local Chevy dealer and they rebuilt my column. They did an excellent job too. Tilts are a little more involved and I wanted mine done quickly, but I think if you take your time and follow the manual you could get it done yourself. If not I think it would be worth your time to ask around at local dealers before you commit to sending your column clear across the states. Shipping is expensive these days with all the fuel surcharges.
