: cowl hood
street/strip68 Jan 7th, 03, 11:46 PM I am trying to figure out my options with cowl hoods. I want to have a cowl hood but not a 3 or 4" outlaw type. It's too tall for the look I want. I can only find a 2 1/4" at Unlimited Products (UP22.com). Are they quality hoods? Also I have two flat all steel hoods to work with and was wondering if anyone has ever tried patching in a metal cowl scoop as found in the back of pretty much any muscle car mag you read.

Jimmy P Jan 8th, 03, 9:45 AM I believe that most folks on this site will tell you of problems with unlimited. However, I bought an SS hood for a 69 from Unlimited and was pleased as far as fiberglass hoods go. They all need work before they look good and fit good. With that said, I will strongly advise you to stick with a steel hood and use a steel cowl scoop. The installation labor would equal the labor on a fiberglass hood AND you will end up with a hood that fits and works well. The end product will be much better and easier to live with.
street/strip68 Jan 13th, 03, 9:29 AM Thanks for your post, I also wrote to Goodmark and it apears that in about 6-9 months there will be a new ALL-STEEL 2" cowl induction hood for 68-69 chevelles for about 449.00. Can't wait. For now I will be making my own from the universal steel cowl they sell. We'll see how that turns out.

Yep, I wouldn't buy from Unlimited again. Check the BBB and you'll see a lot of complaints there as well.
Good luck with your Goodmark hood!

SLOPAR Jan 14th, 03, 8:03 PM I am in the same situation with my 66 right now. Goodmark told me 4 months ago they would have a cowl hood for the car in January and they have not gotten the prototype yet. I talked to them about the steel cowl scoop and it is 3" but can be trimmed to the desired height. I have to talk to my body man about it. I hate to spend 139.00 on the hood and another 300-400 to have him fit it and make it look right. anyone else have a good vendor for this scoop? I would think someone would make a 2 1/4" scoop with a flange already on it. Anyways, don't count on them having a hood until you see a freight tracking number showing the hood is on its way to you. They make good products but as any vendor, stuff like this takes time.

2chevellenuts Jan 15th, 03, 8:35 PM John,
Have you ever thought of a glass hood for you 66?
Glasstek makes a good cowl hood for the 66.
I bought the first one they made in 1995.
They used my flat hood and graphed a Z/28 cowl to it for a mold.
It is very durable and shows no signs of fatigue to this day.

Clint44 Jan 16th, 03, 10:31 PM Does Glasstek make a 2" to 3" cowl hood for a 68-69 w/hinges? I want one for my 69 Elky.
If not,I guess I'll wait for Goodmark to produce one.

SLOPAR Jan 22nd, 03, 8:14 PM 2chevellenuts, I thought about a glass hood but in the interest of what I want to do with this car, that is just not an option. But I have thought about it. I was really hoping that Goodmark would pull through, but I also understand that it is sometimes time consuming to get this type of aftermarket product. The scoop that Goodmark sells I bought is 3" and that is too tall for the application. It will probably cost just as much to modify a stock hood as it will buy one when Goodmark finally releases it.
Thanks,
John Weaver
Redrum Jan 22nd, 03, 11:10 PM Clint44 - Glastech will graft a 67 Z-28 cowl onto a 69 flat hood. I have one they made for my 69 and it is a very good piece. Backside was pretty rough and took about 6 hours of work to finish smooth. Top was very straight and only took a couple of hours to block out straight with 1 coat of PPG's DP90LF and three coats of K38 primer.
