I've got a Turbo 400 from a '70 Vette to stick behind the 327 in my '65 Malibu. First question is will that transmission bolt right up to the motor or will I need some alterations? Second, will I need to modify any of the transmission mounts, crossmembers, etc (other than the driveshaft length and slip yoke)?

Thanks to all!

I did that swap into my 65 ElCamino recently. The bellhousing bolts up just like the glide one. You will need the convertor for the 400, and probably a flywheel to accomodate the larger diameter convertor. If your stuff came from a small blosk car - just use it all. You will need the front driveshaft yoke to fit the trans - it will need to be the "slip in" type. Some of the truck transmissions use yokes are a bolt on type. The 400 tailshaft will accept either. The short tailshaft 400 transmission is needed to make this swap, which is most common. The rear crossmember will have to repositioned backward to accomodate the 400 mount position. You can just drill new holes in the frame lip once you determine the spot. I also had to shorten the driveshaft about 3/4". You may or may not need to do that, depending on the actual front yoke you use, but it isn't expensive. The front driveshaft yoke for the 400 is the "1350" style u-joint size while the front driveshaft joint is the "1310" size. Combination u-joints are made to make that transition. Go to Napa for the part. You can either rework the mechanical shifter from the glide or buy the cable shift kit from any of the Chevelle houses to convert the 400 to your shifter. I left mine on the column to look the sleeper role. If you have the console, buy the conversion cable kit and the new plastic gear indicator insert to make it all look original. Good Luck, OLDED

"Shiftworks" makes the "gut's" you need for the shifter to work correctly if you're planning on using the original floor mount shifter, but want the 400 to work in all detents, park and reverse along with the reverse lights and neutral safety.

Another great pointer..thanks. The problem is that I have a column shifter now and with the bench seat, no console to house the floor shifter they have. I don't want to stick with a column, so I need to come up with a console I can use (maybe some other car of the era has somethig that would work?) to house the shift body or go with a Lokar floor shifter with just a boot and trim ring.

How about building a custom console. MDF, vinyl to match your interior, padding and adhesive. There have been some great looking consoles posted on the boards. Plus, then you can have a modern stereo without cutting your dash and cupholders.

That actually is probably what I'm going to do. i just built a nice custom stereo mount for the glove box out of fiber board. Painted the same metallic aqua blue as the interior.
