Anyone used Eastwood's trunk paint, specifcally the aqua/black? I'm going to redo my trunk (again_ and the last time I used the trunk paint from NPD...seemed a little lighter than I thought it should be.

Anyone used the Eastwood aqua/black?

Thanks,

I prefer the GM stuff, one can will do the trunk. Check over at the camaro board in Body shop,a guy just posted pics of his trunk done with Eastwoods.

I used their version. Worked and matched fine.

Don't forget to put a clear over it as I believe they are a water based product.

If you want authenticity, scrap the clearcoat business. They didn't clearcoat it from the factory. I've seen several "restored" car that have had satinized clearcoat sprayed over the trunk splatter paint. It look like...well, it looked like satinized clearcoat over splatter paint.

Most of the splatter paints that i know of are water based and will turn into a gooy mess if they get wet, thats why it is reommended to clear coat it.

Thanks for the replies. Eastwood's sells a kit ( 3 cans of paint, 2 cans of clear)...probably going with that.

Thanks, and thanks 70isfine, the pics on the Camaro site were just what I wanted to see.

I would paint your trunk black first, you can get away with one can of splatter paint and you will have a much easier time than if your trying to cover a different color or multicolors. I use black epoxy prime, then follow it with the splatter paint.Let it dry a week before you clear it,its water based and dries real slow.

Thanks 70, as a matter of fact, I painted it black a couple of weeks ago. I'm going to spatter paint it, and let that dry atleast a week also...I've still got plenty of work to do up front while that's drying in the back :D

Thanks for your help,

I think I'm the guy that 70isfine was referring too. Heres my post from Camaro Tech.

70isfine I doubt one can will do it mine took 3-1/2 cans of spatter and his Chevelle trunk is bigger yet.

Well, I finally got to finish my trunk. I was ready to spray the clear on it over 2 weeks ago but us people on the east coast got smothered by the humidity wave. (Man that was nasty) Anyway I got it done Tuesday and here's the results. Top 3 pics are of course before. I used paintable undercoating first then Eastwood - 3 black/aqua and 2 gloss clear cans. It's a kit for 34.99 then I had to buy 1 more can to finish it.

Thats why i said i prefer the GM stuff.(Part # - 1#1051499) I primed the trunk in my chevelle with black primer first and did it with one can of the GM paint and had a little left over.Go down to the GM dealer and order a can for about $10.Ramjam i see that your trunk was red, maybe thats why you needed more?

I used the GM stuff and there is no way 1 can will cover the entire trunk.(and look good atleast) I did my 69 chevelle and used 3 cans of paint and 2 cans of satin clear. You WILL need to clear over this paint or you will be redoing it in no time.

No way huh? Did you paint it black first? Here is mine. Two coats of black epoxy primer, one can of GM reconditioning paint, and two cans of satin clear. If the trunk is already black, you dont need that much paint to get the spatter look.If your painting over a color other than black your going to need a lot of paint to cover the other color because it does not cover well.

A lot of restored cars i see, the splatter paint in the trunks are WAY overdone. The trunk should be black, with random splatters, you should be able to distinguish the black from the aqua splatters. Take a look at what i mean in these photos. This is factory splatter paint.

70isfine,
I did have it black before spatter paint. I used paintable black u/coating first. What you see in the before pics is the red primer that was on it about 5 months ago.. I was going to use satin but Eastwood said it should be gloss clear. All I can say is, that GM can must be big. smile.gif
