: EGR problem - Why even bother fixing it?

This is on a new, 2001, vehicle.

I have determined it is not the EGR valve itself that is at fault. Rather, it is the control line comming from the "Powertrain control Module". Sounds overly complicated, right? Well it is, and IT is very hard to get to!

So, I don't want to pay a dealership upwards of $200 to "find" and fix this problem.

In my state, emissions are not tested. So, no problem unless I decide to sell it, right? Well, other than the check engine light always being on. but I have an ODB-II scanner tool should any new codes come up.

Opinions??

Problem with not fixing it is it can screw up the way the car runs and affect gas mileage. It may not do anything bad but it could, depends on how the computer reacts to it.

In most cases, the dealership is obligated to repair emissions related problems up to and including 50,000 miles, I am not sure about the time limit, possibly 5 years.

You got to fix it because the way these stupid computer controlled cars are,the computer treis to compensate for the problem by making the car run differently, possibly causing other problems later down the line. You may not notice anything now,but down the line? Who knows. How do you do in Vegas? Savvy?

Stupid cars.

Vegas was good. A tad cold and rainy, so "roaming" around at night wasn't much fun. tuns of beautiful babies though.

From what I have gathered, the only bad thing that could happen is the computer increase timing (assuming the EGR works) and cause detonation. BUT, under load or full throttle the EGR is disengauged so not worries there.

All I can tell is the added 02 from the exhaust allows for a cooler combustion. This will prevent harmful Ozone haurting by-products from being cerated, but not create any more or less power. It's analagous to running 87 octane versus 93. If you think there's more power there, well, then stop reading this.

They are only stupid cars if we remain smarter. ;)

The EGR doesn't add 02, it adds inert exhaust gases to help cool the combustion process therefore reducing NOX, which when combined with HC and sunlight cause photochemical smog. (I think I got that correct)

I know on 4th gen camaros you can delete the code using ls1edit, I know because 01 and 02 fbodys came with ls6 intakes which did not come with egr provisions. Alot of guys with 98-00 camaros upgrade from an ls1 intake to the ls6 and get rid of the egr totally and delete the code. You may want to do some research and see if there's a program that would delete it for you.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the egr puts exhaust gases in the intake charge to lower combustion chamber temps, I'm assuming that will help with detonation problems. Most newer vehicles have a knock sensor anyhow to take care of detonation (I think it retards timing when it senses a knock). I'm upgrading my '98 to an '02 intake and just getting rid of the egr because it's throwing a code anyhow and is $200 for a new one. If I run into an emissions problem the local speed shop said I can remove the intake and drill a hole for the egr. Good luck.
