: Do I need the Video? (Transgo Kit)
Slowpoke70 Jul 7th, 05, 1:10 PM Hi All,
For those of you that have installed a Transgo "Shift Kit" (reprogramming kit is the correct term, I think.), do you think that laying down the extra $$$ that Summit asks for the Kit'n'Video? Summit only sells it that way, as a packadge, the kit and the vid. But www.bulkpart.com sells the kit alone for MUCH less $$$.
Are the instruction good enough for a rookie?
I've adjusted valves on engines, pulled engines, dropped in engines, intake swaps, ignition swaps, distributor rebuilds/tuning, ignition upgrades, regular maintainence stuff to the whole drivetrain but the most I've done to the trans is change the filter and add a deep pan.
Do the instructions have good diagrams/pictures?
Thanks.
Enrique.
Bob West Jul 7th, 05, 1:20 PM I've done 4 B&M shift kits, and know nothing about transmissions internally, you can do it if your the least mechanically inclined. Just follow instructions, read twice, then lay on your back, look up at the transmission and get acquainted with it. Seems a little backwards at first, but its not hard to do.
Slowpoke70 Jul 7th, 05, 1:23 PM Bob, I heard that I can just pull the whole valve body out and install the kit on a bench and then put valve body back in and button everything up, is it really like that?
72chevy Jul 7th, 05, 1:46 PM Yea, you can do it. Just take is slow and look over everything carefully as you disassemble. Nothing like trying to figure out where that do-hicky came from when you hear a boing, splash.
The video was helpful but it was not exactly in sync with the printed instructions. The printed instructions have a steps not even covered on the video (governor and modulator).
Transgo's tech line was responsive when called. There's also a good group here to offer moral support.
Troy70SS Jul 7th, 05, 5:07 PM Don't waste your money. I've done Transgo and B&M. Neither need a video. As mentioned - take your time and be very deliberate and you'll be fine.
Troy.
Slowpoke70 Jul 7th, 05, 7:00 PM Thanks guys.
NITRO Jul 8th, 05, 8:45 AM Enrique, I recently installed the kit in my TH350 69 wagon. If you like, you can have my video. I can bring it to the SCCCC show on the 17th, if your gonna be there, or PM me with your address and I'll sent it to ya.
Jim
Slowpoke70 Jul 8th, 05, 10:13 AM Awesome Jim! I should be at the SCCCC, so that should work out rather nicely. If something comes up, I'll email you if I'm not attending, but I'm pretty sure I'll be there.
Thanks a bunch!
-Enrique.
Chirp08 Jul 8th, 05, 10:56 AM the video really helped me, the instructions have all the info, but hte video provides a nice order and perfect visual of each step on the valve body, and it answers all your second guesses.
540cutlaSS Jul 8th, 05, 12:00 PM I have the Trans go 4L80Es kit in mine. The video was not helpfull. In this kit you have to drill new passages and it takes alot of consentration not to screw up. If I can do it, you can to. (mine is working great)
Junkyard Dawg May 5th, 07, 2:15 AM I am in this same dillema now. I just got my Trans Go shift kit in the mail. It's the blue box one with the vague as hell instructions.
So now I have the trans pan off and I'm sitting here reading the vague as hell instructions (that were geared more for the guy that's been doing this all his life and not for the guy that is just starting out)....and trying to look and learn and pray that I don't **** up somewhere....
I read about "not letting the manual valve fall out or I'm screwed" and all this greek talk.....
If anyone has any pointers I'd appreciate it.
jakeshoe May 5th, 07, 2:45 AM I was installing these kits before I knew anything about the transmissions and never had issue. TransGo instructions are some of the better one's I've seen.
Wait until you order a kit and you need a magnifying glass to see what is on there and then an ATSG manual to decipher it ala PTS 200-4r KIT.
77 cruiser May 5th, 07, 5:56 AM Ouch!
