I am looking to change the front drum to disk and was wondering if anyone knew anywhere I could buy spindals. I have tried Ebay and they only have the entire kits. It's a '72 by the way.

The only difference between drum spindles and disc spindles after 1969 is that the boss for the drum brake shoe, pivot bolt is taller then the upper caliper mounting boss. I mount a caliper bracket, available from our sponsor, GroundUp for like $100 by the lower mount, swing it up until it contacts the upper mounting boss, scribe a line, hacksaw off the majority and then fixture the spindle up in a bridgeport mill and machine the boss flat. Piece of cake!!

There are plenty of spindle-only auctions on ebay. You still will need the backing plates and brackets. I wish I'd known about Cam Sweet's solution earlier.

I put this list together for my ex once. I machined her husbands spindles for his Nova and she bought him the other stuff for Xmas. These numbers are Schucks numbers but the numbers should be good for just about any auto parts store. This list is only the brake parts. Lines, P valve and booster/master are seperate.

Do you want new or used parts? If you're going to get all new parts, I'm almost positive that it won't be cheaper to buy the parts separately. Granted, you can find cheap parts if you shop around, but you also need to consider the time you'll spend doing it, shipping charges, the gas you use for driving around to the junk yards etc.

You could do what Cam Sweet said, and then try the classifieds for other used parts like dust shields, caliper brackets and other items that won't wear out or need restoration. I wouldn't buy things like calipers, rotors, master cylinder etc. used, unless you get them for cheap and can rebuild them or use them as cores for rebuilt parts.

I used a few used parts for my latest conversion, and bought the rest new from CR Customs. In essence, I bought a kit, but asked him to just omit a few items. Can't remember what I paid, but I know that it was cheaper than buying the parts separately from other sources.

With all that said, I do know that some kits ARE overpriced. When you buy them, you're paying for the convenience of getting everything you need shipped to your doorstep in a box. Still, there are kits that are cheaper than buying separate parts, and that's what I would recommend.

I am going to buy new calibers, rotars, MC, and pads new. I can get them for real cheap from a guy I know. I just neee the spindals.

This is all made a lot easier thanks to some guy who repopped the brackets. Something else to think about, if you are using anything other than 14 inch wheels, I would forego the dust shields. I think they look funny when used with larger rims.

Go to ebaymotors.com and search. Type in "chevelle spindle" and you will get a ton of hits. Make sure you spell spindle correctly and it will pull up a bunch.
