: GM Reconditioning Black
Trevor11 Sep 12th, 00, 5:46 PM I'm continuing the restoration af my '69 El Camino SS.
I've been trying to find a gallon on the GM Reconditioning Black locally, but all the GM dealers tell me it's been on back order forever. One dealer said they had it in spray can form. I figured I might be able to get a local paint shop to match it.
After I got home, I noticed the spray can says Flat Black, along with part # 12346302. I don't recall Reconditioning Black being mentioned as a "flat" black.
Does anyone know if this is the same finish as the gallon size. I'm hoping to use this for the firewall, inner fenders, radiator support, and underside of the hood.

SSuper Dave Sep 12th, 00, 5:58 PM According to Gilbert Propes, GM has changed the formulation of their recon black. It IS now flat. I have tried several different cans both spray and brush, and found this to be true. Eastwoods Underhood Black is the closest that I can find. It does look good, even when butted up against the original finish.asinst

Does anyone stock Eastwood products on the west coast? My car is being painted early next week and I'm afraid I won't get it in time for the body shop. Eastwood has to ship by regular ground UPS since it is a "hazardous" material. That could take 5 or more days!

mstacy Sep 12th, 00, 7:42 PM You will have to go direct with Eastwood. They don't have suppilers out here. I too live on the west coast and your correct about the 5 days.
mstacy Sep 12th, 00, 7:46 PM I just remembered, Year 1 used to sell the GM Recon Paint. You may try them as well. They may still have some of the old stuff
Mr70MonteCarlo Sep 13th, 00, 2:14 PM Year One was out! Try your local Chevrolet dealer, if they don't have it, have them run it on the parts locator. GM part #1050104
micky69396 Sep 13th, 00, 9:12 PM It Is still available and still looks the same, they have had a shortage on it though. I just got some in from my dealer last week

Big James 4XL Sep 14th, 00, 2:32 PM I know the restoration perfectionist would never use Krylon semi flat black spray paint from K mart but get a can and spray it on a piece of metal. I did and it looks like a match to me. Not for a perfect restoration but I think it looks like the original, or, at least doesn't make for an over restored look.

Life aint easy when you're fat and greasy!
micky69396 Sep 14th, 00, 5:47 PM We use that also (Krylon) and several other brands of can paint also.
mstacy Sep 15th, 00, 10:26 PM Ordered a gallon of GM Recon Paint today myself, cost around $33. They also located several gallons at dealers in the L.A. area. So it's out there, just ask the dealer to find it for you.
Canuck64ss Sep 16th, 00, 9:38 AM You can go with the recon black but you can also use Por-15 Chassis Black. Of course the POR would need to go on bare metal but the end result would be a considerable tougher finish that will withstand some heavy stuff. If you paint POR over an already painted surface then it will only be as strong as the paint under it.
The only drawback is that once it's on there and dry, it's there for the long haul.
Hope it helps.
