On the underside of the hood around the opening there is a frame/undercarriage (where the nuts are for the vacuum canister). Should there be a gap between this frame and the hood or should the two be touching/attached? I don’t know if the sheet metal has popped loose or if it’s supposed to be like this. I can take my hand and press the hood down until it touches the frame. When the flapper door is shut, the hood is about ¼ inch higher, so I’m trying to figure out what I need to do.

I looked on my 72's cowl hood by the vacuum canister mount and don't see any thing as you describe. I am not clear as to what gap you are talking about. Is your hood a factory one or a reproduction?

I also have a cowl hood I'm working on. I know what your talking about, mine is fairly straight through there(one of the few places) the 2 pieces of metal should come together in that area but there should be about 3/16" to about 1/4 inch behind the nuts for the bolts/screws.

I was looking my hood over today. I found that the piecies were together in the area your talking about.

Thanks everyone! After closer inspection with a flashlight, I was could see that the hood was supposed to be attached to the under carriage frame. I could see where the hood pulled away from the frame becuase the "goop" or glue they used at the factory was still attached to the frame and you could see the imprint where the hood used to be. over the years, it must have popped loose. That explains why the flapper opening was always higher than the flapper door.
Does anyone know what type of adhesive I should use to fix this? Maybe some 3M super weather strip adhesive?
