for future reference, I've been reading alot of previous posts on this. I will be painting Ascot blue metallic(paint code 24 for 71). Many have said go with bc/cc for metallics. but ive read conflicting info on wet sanding the base coat.
no wet sanding a base coat especially metallic for any reason. only the clear.
Is this correct?????
with a bc/cc metallic do you still need to fog the last coat of base?

Correct.. Especially with metallics.. I still am wondering about non-metallics, but absolutely NO sanding of metallic basecoat only clear! As with fogging, if you see imperfections or changed the angle of spray fogging should be done.. But the Pro's will tell you for sure on the fogging http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif Good Luck!!!

Chris, Normie, most base coats are NOT to be sanded, and it actually has little to do with being a metallic or not. It has to do with the wax that is in the color. Not all, but most of the first generation basecoats are based on an acrilic enamel technology. They have a wax in them to keep the surface open to "accept" the clear better. So if you sand it, you will notice the paper gum up real bad, that is the wax. Now, if you sand vigorously you will heat up the surface and bring it to the top......not good.
If you look at the tech sheet for the product you are using, it will tell you. Some "second generation" basecoats are urerthane like ChromaPriemer by Dupont or PPGs DBU and can be sanded (as I remember these can, CHECK THE TECH SHEET FIRST).
But I will tell you, you should never have to sand it. If you lay it out properly, it will be just fine. And any dirt nibs in it you can sand out of the clear and buff, so sanding the base is unnessisary.
