I'm hoping you can point me in the right direction. This is for my 74 VW Thing. My turn signals will only function with the headlights turned on. I have not looked at anything yet, just trying to take a short cut and not have to look at everything. :) Would you think power (fuses) or ground?

At home today and on the dial-up so clicking on large files kills the 'puter. Doesn't all later V-dubs follow a Bosch style of wiring? Been a lot of years since I played with one. The Bosch scheme uses relays a lot and suspect there's a turn signal relay in your Thing. If so, I'd see if the relay is being powered with the heads lights off.
Think there's a schematic in this link but can't pull it down on the dial-up to peak at it.

Thanks John. I'll look for that. I knew you would be able to point me in the direction to start.

John, I checked my relay. I have power to the relay without the headlights. As soon as I turn on the parking lights it begins to click, but does not flash any lights. It seems that it is getting powered by the parking lights. I pulled all off the parking lights, except for the front side marker lights, and it still did it, so I do not think it is feeding back through a light. It is a 4 wire relay. One wire is ground and I have replaced the connector to assure a good ground. For the life of me, I cannot figure out the VW schematics. :clonk: Any ideas? Thanks.

I'll see if I get a chance to print them out and look at them. The only complete set is in German so I may have to contact someone for a little help.

I found another wiring diagram that I can follow a little better. I'll post again if I need more help, before you spend a day downloading the files with dial up. Thanks again.

I think I was able to diagnose it as the hazard light switch. Any idea how I can test the switch, other than trying a new one?

Can't see what it looks like but if it's a switch it should have at least 2 terminals. One is the common swinger terminal that contacts the other terminal when you move the switch. An ohmeter can tell you if it opens and closes.

John, thanks for your help. I got it figured out last night. It seems that some dumb a.. moved a wire on the fuse block when he put the new stereo in the car. :clonk: I moved it back to where it belonged and all was fixed. :) Now, if I could just get past seeing the dumb a.. every time I look in a mirror. :D

Cool and the fix was cheap.
