Which i want to get the best out of this engine it has the oval port heads w/ header on it i have a 400 Trans with 4:11 Posi Rear but the cam in it is bad has a flat spot on it and this thing want get pass 3000 rpm with poping back threw the carburator can anyone here suggest a camshaft that will give me the best performance for my setup. Thanks

If I was replacing a camshaft today in a mostly street car, I'd look at Harolds VooDoo line. Back in the old days, I had good luck with Mellings street/strip hydraulic cams, I'm not sure who made Mellings cams though.

The cam is the "brains" and also the "personality" of your engine so select wisely. If it's a daily driver with a stock stall converter going too big can really spoil your fun! If drivability is important but you want as much usable power as you can get, I'd recommend a Comp XE-268 (224/230, .515/.520) or the Lunati Voodoo at 219/222, 530/542. I'm running the XE268 in my `72 402, stock converter and 3.55's, and I'm happy with it. Has a nice lope at idle but enough low end torque to light up 275/60's when you mash it from a stop. Drivability is excellent and it still meets smog regs without any emissions gear (750 Holley, headers, etc.).

When you say flat spot, do you mean it physically has flat spot on one of the lobes as if it is wiping out? thats what I assume you mean, but just in case you mean a flat spot in the sense that the motor doesnt run right and feels like it has a dead spot and backfires and everything, its most likely tuning related. Let us know just in case we are mis-interpreting anything.

Anyways, I think you mean that the cam is starting to wipe out and I too like a voodoo 262 or 268 for that motor. The 268 is nice with your gears, however, depending on which stock heads you have and how well they flow, the size of your converter and compression, the 268 might be a little much. If youve got a stock converter with lower compression and a bone stock casting that isnt very desireable, Id probably just use the 262 voodoo cause it would be a much better match and use a taller tire to tame those gears up.

If youve got that info(converter, compression, heads and even tire height) that will help.

You motor is about the same Hope this helps :waving:

[QUOTE=My choice would be the 60200, the VooDoo 250. It is 250/256 at the seat, 207/213 at .050, .495"/.515" valve lift, and 112 LSA. It will take a 71 Chevelle well over 110 on the hiway, and should run just fine on 87-octane. It will have plenty of vacuum and lots of torque under 5000. One of the earlier UltraDyne versions let a 75 GMC motor home with a 455 Olds pull a car behind it at 95 mph, so it has plenty of snort, and will give decent mileage at cruising speeds.

The 60201 is also usable, with more power above 4000. It would be the largest I would use. They both have the UltraDyne/VooDoo idle.....
The 60201 is very usable with a stock converter and 2.73 gears, however, it is the largest I would use with a stock converter and 2.73 gears, as well as your stock exh manifold. We had a test of a bone-stock 454 with Quadrajet, cast iron intake and exhaust, and the UD 272H12 at Mercury Marine, in the 1980s. It made 370 BHP at 5000, and about 21" of vacuum. The 60201 should have more bottom-end and more vacuum.....
