: Can I Weld without Argon on a MIG?

I need to do i little bit of tack welding and my 135 wire feed Lincoln Mig is set up for Agron right now. I dont care how ugly the weld is, nor how structurally strong, just need to weld something quick.

thanks

You can weld, but the weld will have impurities from the air in it. The argon supplies an inert gas cloud around the weld puddle. It displaces the impure air that we breathe. The weld will still work. Dennymac

You can try flux mig weldin wire. It has the gas in the wire already. It works pretty well and is especially useful when welding outdoors

I also have a 135 Miller, I use .035 flux core wire, works very well, makes very nice and clean looking welds, you should have no problem with that. thats the reason flux core wire is used, it can be used in place of shielding gas.

like what has already been said you can weld with a mig even if it runs out of argon. when my argon has run out while i was welding i just noticed how the weld started getting dirtier thats all.

So it doesn't make the weld weaker just means it'll be dirtier weld? what effect will that have on the weld? Thanks

Yes indeed a weaker weld. For one the argon/co2 sheilds away oxygen. If it is not present or your using a cored type wire you get poor metal to metal "burn in",also it creates porosity(small air bubbles that come up thru the weld when cooling) which is in effect a weak weld

correct, but if you just need to tac here and there and you are not relying on the structural integrety of the weld it should be fine.

I repair elevators for a living, and use fluxcore wire in my 135 Miller, I do finish welding with it, and have no problems. I also use a Century that uses C25 gas, of course the gas shielding makes a better weld, the question was "Can I weld without Argon On A Mig?" the answer is of course you can!
