71Elky,
I'm not a body man either, but I'll throw in my two cents worth to keep this alive.
The best way to get rid of rust without it coming back, is to take the area down to bare metal and out past the affected area a few inches if possible. Once you're down to bare metal, use a good self etching primer to seal up the area, followed by a high solids primer, then apply a good quality paint, bc/cc preferably. Don't forget to sand prior to shooting the color/base coat. If you do this yourself, ask the guys at the paint store about how to perform a "drop coat" prior to shooting the clearcoat. Basically you lower the pressure on the gun, and allow the paint to drop onto your work area. It minimizes any streaks in the metallic, and allows the metal flakes to align themselves. Are you using metallic paint? If not, I don't think you need to use the drop coat.
I tried to fix an area on the hood of my '90 Chevy truck with the Duplicolor primer and paint, but it came back even worse within a year or so. Duplicolor would probably be okay if you didn't have to go to bare metal. I finally went to NAPA and talked in detail about what paint to use so that "It will not return", and took notes on mixing everything. The guy was way more helpful than I ever hoped for. I had painted in a paint booth at a machine shop I worked at, but not on a car, so I had a little knowledge of the process before hand.
I have a 6.25hp/30 gallon Campbell-Hausfeld compressor, so I bought an inline filter/separator, a $50 Campbell-Hausfeld Automotive spray gun, and a gage to have a pressure reading at the gun. I took the hood down to bare metal about halfway back from the front edge, and then used the materials they recommended. I built a booth in the garage out of plastic sheeting, and put filters and fans in for ventilation(clogged up pretty quick though) graemlins/angry.gif
The hood turned out much better than I expected, but the rust hasn't come back and the hood looks better than the rest of the truck. :D
I think that was a little more than $.02 worth, sorry...
Search for "Basics of Basics" or "MARTINSR". He's put a lot of stuff on here about prepping and painting.
Good luck to you,
Jim
