Did any of the very early 69s have the VINs 136378 instead of 136379 for a Malibu 2 door hardtop?

No. The 6th digit is the year and all 69 model year Chevelles would have a '9' even if built in late 1968.

Thanks for the quick answer back.

The reason why I asked was because of this Ebay ad: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6164&item=4559957837&rd=1

What is your take on this?

Thanks,
Hugh

Her and I emailed back and forth quite a bit about it the last time it was on ebay, she doesn't want to know anything about her car having the VIN tag switched.

It is believed that this is one of the first 2600 or so 1969 SS 396 Chevelle's produced in 1968, therefore carrying the 1968 title but the 1969 model year SS396 parts & appearance.

Has an early "68" production number yet it's a early "69" not a "late 68". IF it was one of the first 69's produced during the 68 model year it would have a very late "68" production number wouldn't it?
Or am I confused?

She'll probably find someone stupid enough to pay 15 K for it.

I don't care what is said in that ad, the VIN is for a 1968 model year period. When it was made has nothing to do with the model year as car models years run August thry July of the following year, always have and do to this day. Heck local Ponitac dealer has a new 2006 Pontiac G6 on the lot as of last week, built in May 2005. May Cadillac CTS is a 2005 model built in May of 2004.

Be very careful with buying cars you cannot document on ebay or anywhere else for that matter. It getting to be very common knowledge that if you want to sell some junk, place an ad on ebay and one of the millions surfing there will pay thru the nose for it.

I know someone in my area that got screwed out of over 10g on a Z28 Camaro that turned out to be a damn good clone. He was not to educated about Z28 and was lured in by the ad alone. Flew from Michigan out to NW to driver the car back, but it would not make it 200 miles and broke down big time. Everything was slapped together and never driven. Cost him more money to have a buddy drop everything, drive out with a trailer and haul it back here. He tried to sue the guy but he disappeared off the face of the earth.

On the link provided in the eBay ad it says '69 SS but the text says a '68 SS, d'oh. A 68 SS could be identified by the VIN and a 13637 in '68 is a Malibu and not a 13837 SS. The car has been discussed here before. It's a 68 VIN and 68 title with either (1) 69 sheetmetal, including doors and glass, or (2) an illegal '68 VIN on a '69 Malibu. At least she seems to know the "firing order by heart". :clonk:

According to her website, the cowl tag is missing. I don't think she has a clue what she has.

I said it before and I'll say it again.

I'll bet that car is somebodys stolen 69. re tagged.

I cannot believe she would be so stupid to try and sell it on ebay with so many people looking.

I'd love for nothing more than to see this car go back to it's rightful owner.

Yes, the State Patrol should investigate. The real VIN number is on that car. They'll know where !

I told her before that the real VIN is stamped in different places on the vehicle and she told me I didn't know what I was talking about. :(

Where else would it be stamped?

Where else would it be stamped?

Hidden in various places on the frame and body.

I also E-mailed her last time and she told me she had proof it was a 69 ss

I then asked her if the vin matched the number under the heater box

she would not return an E-mail and I sent it three times

she is aware of what issues the car has - in my opinion

The quarter panels appear to be '69. It would be interesting to see what numbers are stamped under the heater box. Our '69 Chevelle was stamped B412XXX below the round hole and the rectangular hole as well. Didn't find the VIN stamped anywhere else except the trans and engine.

Can anyone near Berkely Michigan follow up on this with the local police or highway patrol ?

Ya know I just don't get it. If I had a 1972 El Camino and the VIN tag was from a 1965 El Camino, do you think anyone would be concerned ? I don't see any difference between that and this car.

Why isn't law enforcement on top of this ?
