I have a 72 chevelle i just hooked my painless muscle car harness and everything works except front park lights and dash lights. I verified that the park light housings and bulbs were good i also moved the wire on the headlight switch to both positions new and old gm switch as per the wiring manual and still no luck any help would be appreciated.

I would check to make sure you have a good ground to both spots. I'm also using a painless kit. I just grounded my park lights to the fenders (grounding them to the trim stud of the park light). I have aftermarket gauges over the original dash cluster. I grounded my gauge lights back to the firewall. Everything seems to be working correctly on mine. Also if you are using part of your old harness to make connections, Make sure your old harness is getting power to it using a test light. I had one that I thought was all hooked up, turns out wire was broke about halfway down the old park light harness.
I hope this helps

Thanks for the info i've been reading about dash grounds on this site and was wondering what you did for the 3 ground wires that go to park brake, headlight switch , and wiper switch. Because their is no such wires in the painless kit.

The original harness had an orange wire from the tail light fuse. That wire/fuse runs both the park (tail) lights and the dash lights. See if you have 12 volts on the headlight switch in that terminal. It should be there even with the switch left on OFF.
The 72 grounds to the alternator bracket and the inside right fender.

Your rear park lights ground out by the socket going into the housing. You might check to see if you have any rust around there. I had some causing my lights to flicker. I cleaned the rust and works great. As far as the wiper switch, it will ground out to the metal plate in the dash insert. This switch must be grounded in order for the wipers to work, since the wipers work off a ground on both speeds. If you dont have the the dash in, you can run a piece of wire from the switch housing to anywhere that you get a good ground. Use this only temporarly untill you get the dash back in, if it is out.

p.s. the headlight switch also grounds out to that same metal plate that the wipers do

Thanks for all the info. I went over all my grounds again today and they all seem to be good i have the batt grounded to the alt bracket and fender and the core support grounded to the frame now. Still no front park lights checked the fuses and their all good. I don't have a volt meter to check the brown wire on headlight switch though, But the headlights work and the knob will turn the dome light on and off but still no front park lights or dash lights. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
p.s As far as the dash goes i have all the grounds to it hooked to the firewall now. After i did that i finally got one light to work it was the left turn signal light nothing else worked not even the lights to my after market gauges worked.

Ya need to check the connection I referred to. The head lights don't have anything to do with the dash lights.

Thanks for all the help guys i purchased a new headlight switch today and it fixed all the problems. Now i just have to figure out these idiot lights. Its a sweep gauge dash just wondering if one bulb is bad does it effect the whole row or are they all individual any info would be appreciated. Also i have after market gauges so i wont be hooking up the temp light or the gen light will that matter.

The positive side of the idiot lights is common. They are run off the IGN side of the ignition switch.
