: Correct specs for 70 Chevelle SS stripes?

My Chevelle Restoration book shows two sets of dimensions for these stripes depending on when the car was built. Mine was built before April of 1970 so should use the early design. The book shows hood/deck width to be 10.64 with pin stripe to be .30. It shows stops from edge of panel are the same for all 70s. It shows overall centering dimensions outward from centerline on the hood to be 1.77 and from the deck 1.68.

Can anyone verify whether this is correct? All stencil kits that I have seen are only for the "later" design which mine would not be. Is anyone selling a stencil kit for the "early" design stripes or are they only available for the "second" design?

When judging original restored 70s is either "early" or "second" design stripes acceptable or must one have the correct one for their production date?

Car is being professionally painted.....any tricks to painting the stripes (which don't have the stencil kit available) or is this a slam dunk for any professional?

Thanks.

I don't think there is a stencil kit available for the earlier stripes. Unless you're doing a concourse resto that going to have all the correct fasteners, hoses, crayon markings, etc. then just use the stencil kit. Your painters will thank you for it! I think the later design stripes look better anyway IMO. My elky was built in Dec. 69'and I used the stencils.
In the assembly manual, the first drawing dated 4/28/69 indicates the hood dimension is 1.80 from centerline. It was revised to 1.77 on 6/4/69, and further revised to 1.66 on 4/24/70.
The dimension from the front edge of the hood is 1.00. This was changed to .95 on 6/4/69 also.
The 10.64 dimension on the deck lid is correct, (for the stripe only) overall width should be 11.80 with outer stripes. This was narrowed to 10.52 on 4/24/70.
The hood centerline dimension, and the 2.30 dimension from the outer stripe, to the hood crease, controls the hood stripe width.
Notice on all the older drawings that the stripes are drawn on flat (non ss) hoods. The revised drawing dated 4/24/70 is drawn on a ss hood.
Good luck!

Holy Cow three relpies from the Iowa guys how sweet is that. Ohhawk did those pics of the deck lid emblem turn out all right?

70elky is right there is no one making early stencils for the SS stripes. As for the dimensions they are right for both designs, but one thing is where the stripe ends on deck filler panel does it end before it gets to the molding or go all the way up to the molding? Ive seen it done both ways but more people seem to prefer the stripe going all the way up to the molding.

As for painting the stripes, coming from a body man, it should be somewhat easy to do as long as you provide a few pictures to go by...Eric

According to the assembly drawings, the deck lid paint stripe ends 1.09 before molding on convertibles, and 2.00 on coupes. The stripe ends at the deck lid opening if the car has the RPO C08 molding option (molding at the deck lid opening).
