: List of questions.

Ok, i have some general questions about a 71 chevelle and didn't want to fill up the other threads so i hope this is ok.
1. I heard you can substitute one quart of trans fluid in with engine oil when changing oil to clean out an older gunked up engine. Is that correct? If not, what is the best way to clean out an engine without rebuilding it?
2. Is it worth trying to sell a factory ac/heater unit? (complete everything except controls and compressor)
3. Is an aftermarket ac/heater unit a direct replacement? (I.E. same connectors or simpler wiring?)
4. Is the factory pigtail from the fender to the battery negative required when you have a wire running from the neg. to the engine block?
5. Can windshields be purchased with the antenna wire in it?
6. What is a reasonable price to rechrome a bumper (note: only rechrome it, no metal work required)
7. How is it possible to have a California built car with no smog pump?? (On the ORIGINAL build sheet, it does not have the K19 option, but it is an L.A. car. Apparently, the guy i bought it from, the original owner, said he paid extra not to have it, he said it could have gotten him and the dealership in a lot of trouble. Has anyone heard of anything like that? Also, on the ORIGINAL rad cover sticker it states that it does NOT have smog or A.I.R. ?)
8. How does my car have LS3 on the buildsheet but it is NOT an SS. It is a factory malibu.
9. Last question, when i bought the car and was looking at the build sheet there was one option i couldn't and still can't find in the decoders i have looked (although that is few so i'm not saying it is impossible, in fact, i remember there being one on this site but can't find it now) the code is C49. The guy said it was kinda rare but it was removed or something when someone broke into the car a few years back (i'm guessing something to do with either glass or ignition because the guy broke out ALL the windows and hammered a screwdriver into the ignition.) He couldn't remember what it was cause he was like 90 and now has passed away.

Well, sorry for all the questions! Thanks!

1 dunno
2 I'd keep the factory a/c/heater unit unless you're making this a race car or you just don't care. People these days pay more for an a/c equipped car.
3 dunno
4 not sure but why not have it?
5 not sure if anyone still makes them but it was an option for '71
6 not sure....never had to have it done
7 perhaps the owner removed it himself and doesn't remember?
8 LS3 was the 402 engine and was the biggest engine for the non SS models
9 dunno

I will just answer #1 right now because it could save your engine. Dont flush the engine with anything, just change the oil and then do it regularly. If you flush the engine out you will never get it all out of the pan and then it will end up in the oil pump pickup and other places you dont want it.

4 & 5 are both yes. On 5 sometimes they don't work well depending on what was use to put the window in. Also you will need the connector installed for the windshield antenna.

9. C49 = Electro Clear defogger

Found right here (http://www.chevelles.com/shop/options.html) on Team Chevelle...

Ok, thanks guys, is that c49 option rare?? I guess it would make sense that it doesn't have it cause the pic of the car right after it had been broken into showed that EVERY windwo was smashed!? Ok, and so my car came stock with a 402? Is that kinda rare? Would that make it a Malibu 400?? I remember when i was haggling for the car, he would not go below his price because apparently "It wasn't just any ordinary malibu and came with a large rare engine" but the guy was kinda old so didn't remember the exact cubic inches. He told me he removed it to put a 350 in for gas mileage purposes...darn it!!! Well, thanks, and about the engine, so i shouldn't use the trans fluid? I mean, even an engine builder said it would be ok if i changed the oil like 500 miles?! LOL, i just dont want to ruin my engine!! Thanks again guys!

Using 1 qt transmission fluid to 4 qts oil is an accepted way to clean out sludge. Just dont do like the old timers did and use diesel fuel.

If I felt I had to flush the engine, I would use a can of Berryman pour in Chem-tool in the oil, and I have used it many times, many years ago. I don't recommend it, all that gunk is not only going to take up residence in your pan, it's being redistributed to all of the other locations that it is not wanted. You're likely introducing a problem, where otherwise one didn't exist. Limit runtime with flush additive (whatever kind), drain immediately, if exceptionally nasty, spray carb spray into drain hole, let drain thoroughly, refill with thin oil (5-30?), run briefly, drain hot, refill with normal oil.

Keep original A/C, generally the only advantage is less power needed for modern compressors. Aftermarket units are no where near direct replacement, contain alot of plastic and will never be as efficient cooling wise as the original. Unless you have specific, underlying reasons, don't even consider it. You can swap the compressors and/or convert the original system to 134a, but 134a simply is not as efficient of refrigerant, in any system.

Yes, you want the pigtail to the chassis, motor mounts are rubber, keep chassis ground and ground straps.

+/-$150.00 depending on quality and layers of plating (nickel/chrome).

I believe that California dealers could order 49 state vehicles to sell to out of state residents, This year, I have ordered direct from the factory (Fleetwood) in Riverside, two motorhomes, ran paperwork through California dealer and had delivered to stateline (Nevada). Papers were notarized (I provided Notary Public) in a parking lot at 1am. I didn't have to travel to Ca. and the Vehicles never went to the dealer. Yes it's possible.

In the late '70's early '80's my high school sponsored and built a few roundy round cars, we acquired a 4 door Chevelle out of a field, it was a former Ca. Highway Pursuit car, definitely 402, no smog evident, had three bow ties cast in the block. After one season in a '65 Impala, we switched to a 350 and I kept the BB. I imagine there were plenty of similar vehicles nationwide.

I'm not a Chevy historian, just history with a Chevy.
