I will take a pay cut initially but its worth it to me. Nothing is going to stop me from shaking this field. I can move back up through the ranks in whatever I do next as I am a pretty driven guy in that respect. You just gotta take the leap and go for it.
Hell, out here BART train operators make more than most IT folks (excluding management)
Maybe i'll drive BART trains. Heck, the median salary for these guys is around 65K and after bennies, sick time, all that they're JUST BARELY under 100K......to make a commuter trian stop and go and open the doors.
IT is going to get worse and worse and job opportunity and pay is going to decline with outsourcing and the flood of technical skilled folks hitting the market. Crime never goes away. People will always get sick. People will always drink coffee and people will always watch porn.
Open a coffee shop, get into the medical field, law enforcement or porn and you've got a pretty damn solid gig. :D

Midnight Marauder Jul 6th, 05, 5:10 PM The highest paid City of Madison Employee is a City Bus Driver. (Thanks to creative union contracts and overtime)
Same with BART employees. Union has a stranglehold.
They're (BART) in a huge deficit, been raising fares, still waaaaay deep in the whole.....and the Union, with killer pay and bennies already, is pushing for more and currently threatening to strike. If and when they do strike, the public is going to get REAL nasty toward that union and BART employees and it will not subside for a very long time. I remember the last strike. I think it was almost two years later before the hundreds of middle fingers stopped greating all the train operators.
