: Another compressor question

I'm in the market for an air compressor and I've been reading everything I can find. Somewhere on this site I read a recommendation to stick with a low rpm motor (1750) and specifically to stay away from the high rpm (3450) models. I can't find that thread again. Does anyone know why this was recommended and how important it really is?
Also does anyone have an Ingersoll Rand 5 hp 2 stage? If so, what is the hp on that motor? I've emailed I/R about it but haven't heard back and the nearest dealer that has one is 100 miles away.
I'm also looking at a Husky 2 stage sold by Home Depot but it is the high rpm type. Good price though.

I prefer belt driven compressors. The direct drive compressors are really noisy!!!

I assumed both low rpm and high rpm motors were for belt driven compressors. Are you saying the low rpm models are direct drive? If so that makes the decision easier. I don't want a direct drive.

Here's another related question, especially for anyone using that Husky: What else do I need to buy to set one up (other than air lines, hoses and tools etc)? The reason I ask is, I see on Ingersoll Rand's site they offer their compressors as either "standard packaged: or "fully packaged" and I havent figured out the difference yet.

Chevellenut, Do you have an IR that you bought from Tractor Supply? If so also tell me the model number. The two nearest stores to me are both 100 miles away and when I've called them one said they didn't have one in stock but could get it and he quoted me model TS4N. The other store has one and they said the model number is TS5. Neither of those numbers are legitimate models on the IR web site. I can get a model 2340L5 from Northern Tools for 999 shipped free and probably no taxes but that model is only 14.7 cfm@175psi. They also have a TS4L5 for 1099 but it's still only 15.5 cfm. The model TS51N5 is 17.1 and if that's what Tractor Supply is selling it's what I'd prefer.

Very nice but $999 was already more than I wanted to spend. It sure would be nice to have one of the quiet dry models but ....

the model ts5 refers to the pump model not the whole compressor i know this because i have one. it is not to noisey and it will cycle with my d\a sander, airfile,or anything that i run. 17.5cfm@90 psi or 15cfm@175 hope this helps you make your mind up ps. bought mine at home depot for $600. luke

I've got the IR TS5N5 5 hp 2 stage/80 gallon verticle tank compressor from TSC. What did you need to know about it?

Sebastian: How long ago did you pay $600 for a TS5? I'd jump on that if I found one for that price.
10SecBu: what is the rpm rating on the motor? When did you buy yours? Is TSC Tractor Supply?

Another post lead me to believe the lower rpm was important. I'd prefer an IR to a Husky but if these IR motors are the high rpm also, then I don't know if I'll spend an extra $130 and drive a 100 miles to get the IR.

Are you saying Ingersoll Rand's compressors are made by c\h? Or that what HomeDepot sells is. Home depot now sells Husky brand which I think c/h does manufacture.

Yes, TSC is Tractor Supply. I bought mine from the store in Hanover PA because our local Westminster store was out of stock.

It retailed for $999 and I got it for $950 as it had some scratches on the tank from some idiots who didn't know how to run a pallet truck/cart.

The electric motor is a 3450 rpm with a 1750 pump rpm.

I too would have perfered a 1000 or lower rpm, but my budget was $1000 and this was the best I could find in that price range. If I had $1800 to spend, I would have gotten a 7.5 hp two stage 900 rpm compressor from Eaton Compressor.

As little use as my compressor gets, this should last me a very long time. It's four times the compressor it replaced which was a very small and over rated Sears Craftsman 5 hp (peak) 30 gallon portable that was probably a true 2 hp compressor. Even so, I worked that little old thing to death and it held up for over 20 years.

BTW, there's no way I believe that Ingersol Rand contracts out to Campbell Hausfeld to have their compressors made. I'd believe that Home Depot's Husky compressors are CH's though.

Wow the IR TS5N5 is a high-rpm motor. That means it's specs are about identical to the 2-stage Husky Home Depot is now selling. I too won't use it that heavily so I'm beginning to think the Husky is going to fit the bill.

I just looked again and told you wrong initially. It's a 3450 rpm electric motor with a 1475 rpm pump, NOT a 1750 rpm pump.

sorry about the confusion was talking about the husky brand of compressors being made by c\h.you might want to try northern tools or harberfreight tools they used to carry single and two stage comprssors at a desent price luke

look for a compressor that is 220 volt,at least 5hp,motor rpm 1750,2 stage.Don't buy one with motor rpm of 3450,for the reason of:a compressor is just like an engine and one that is using a 1750 motor will turn compressor slower and it will last longer. The 3450 is going to have a higher compressor rpm, which means most of the time they are using a smaller compressor pump and making up the cfm buy turning it faster. The lower rpm the compressor turns with high cfm is better.
