I have a 64 conv. that needs about everything. I was wondering if the following items were interchangable with a 1965 or a different model:

Doors- are they the same as a hard top door, 1964 and 1965?
rear seat- same as a hard top?
Windshield and sheet metal on pillars- same as a hard top 1964 and 1965?

I do have a 4 door 1965 parts car. I am planning on even using the 1965 frame, having it boxed in the right areas. I assume I can use the 1965 fenders and inner fender wells. The deck lid looks the same too with different trim holes.

i believe the fenders are different, the wind shield trim is different between conv and hard top.you may notice a difference in the wind shield clips.also the frame has more bushings than hard top.i'd try and fix the conv frame first.also save those sun visors from convertible.those things are hard to find.

How bad is your frame? Mine was cracked almost completely through in front of the rear wheel arch and I had it repaired.

BTW, the fenders are different. I've heard that the inner fenders are different, but I cannot swear to it.

A 65 doghouse will bolt directly onto a 64, but the entire front styling is different. Also, the radiator support mounting holes are smaller on the 64. It used cardboard shims and bolted directly to the frame, where as the 65 support used bushings.

The doors (not 4dr) are the same. The trunk lid will bolt directly, but theres the issue of trim holes.

The rear seat bottom, or back will not fit from a hardtop. The convertibles seat is shorter to make room for the folding top mechanism on the sides.

As stated by the other guys, try to save the frame, or get another convertible frame.

You can get new convertible sun visors on eBay.

The visor brackets (chrome) are available at Original Parts Group.

Unfortunately, my frame is shot, by that I mean gone from wheel to wheel.

Sorry to hear that. For what it's worth. All 64-65 "A" body convertible frames will work, but there MAY be the possibility of slight mods to be made. Nothing major.
Olds F85, Pontiac Le Mans, Tempest, GTO, Buick Skylark will fit.
If you post a want ad in the classifieds here on this site, you might get lucky.

How involved do you think it would be to modify a hardtop frame? From what I know it would mean boxing in certain portions of the frame.

If the box portions of your frame are good, they can be cut out and welded onto another frame. It just takes time and money.

fenders and wheel wells are different. don't be scared to box the 4 door frame. the 64 has a different height when measured at the frame horns to the ground. check that against the 65 height. hardtop doors are the same except for the glass, that is conv specifec. tom

Thanks Tom. I did not know that about the door glass. Between myself and my friends, boxing the frame is not a big deal, as long as the frame is the same in all other aspects. Seems that he entire front clip is different inluding hood and inner fenders. Doors and frame is the same as well as the shape of the deck lid but with different trim. I guess the hood hinges are different too?

yes the hood hinges are different also. but 64's are the same as 64-67 olds and pont. you could put the entire front clip from the 65 on and just forget about any side chrome. are you interested in selling it all? tom

I beg to differ. The quarter window glass is convertible specific. The door glass is the same.

No, the door glass is different also.
If you look closely at the leading top edge, you'll see that the hdtp glass is flat and the convertible has a crown.

Learn something new every day, huh !

If you are not learning something every day, you must be stupid.
Thanks for setting me straight.

I guess the question is can hardtop glass be used on a convertible, even though it is (slightly) different?

Tom- I assume you are talking about the 65 parts car. If so then I may sell it whole only if I can fine a 64 parts car. I am partial to the 64 front which basically means I need an entire front clip. I will not be using my 65 front clip for sure.

Just for everybodys info- Goodmark is coming out with a steel 1964 2" cowl hood next summer.

So..Can the hardtop glass be used on a convt?

Yes, if you don't mind a huge gap between the top and the glass and the wind whipping thru your hair on the freeway.

If it never rains where you are and you don't plan on washing the car, then I'd say go for it !

Seriously though, you should check with your local auto glass shop. They can probably get you new door glass !
