: Gearing up - what kind of semi gloss black
Unclepennybags Nov 1st, 02, 7:53 AM Gearing up to paint the Malibu. Though I've painted probably 15-20 cars since I was a teenager this is the first one that I want to "approach" restoration quality.
I will be using a Dupont Centari enamel for the body. What black should I use for the underside of the hood and the inner fenders? Doesn't need to be PERFECT, but I want it to look close.
Thanks!
Mike
mr409 Nov 1st, 02, 8:38 AM If you want to use a paint sprayer, you might want to try GM's chassis black. I personally use rattle can Krylon. Real nice when a touch up is needed.

Jimmy P Nov 1st, 02, 11:16 AM Eastwood's underhood black is a good product that goes on well and stays 'clean' looking. It also has the right gloss. Rattle can paint looks good for 2 weeks.
May I ask a question ? Why on earth are you using enamel paint for the body? Why not use a good urethane that will go on easier, buff out better and last 10 times better?
Unclepennybags Nov 1st, 02, 11:59 AM Jimmy,
Well, I like to use what works for me. I've had great luck with Dupont Centari, and PPG Ditzler Delstar. I have thought of going to one of the newer paints, but I really don't want to buy a new gun since this will probably be one of my last paint jobs. (It's a Devilbus 502-jga?)
I also like the spray it - and - you - are - done aspect of enamel. On top of that I already have the paint. I bought it about 2 years ago. I just hope it is still good!

Buzzbomb Nov 1st, 02, 12:38 PM Unclepennybags-
I'll second the vote for Rattlecan Krylon- I use the Rust Tough version and it is much more durable than its "regular" cousin gets credit for.

You can also use Rustoleum 7777(?). To me, its a little more glossier than flat, BUT it is still a nice under hood paint and looks great. The cool thing about the Rustoleum- you can buy it at Home Depot for MUCH MUCH less in a Quart can than you would buying a bunch of rattle cans. I think its like 8 bucks a quart- not at all a bad deal! Its enamel too!

I'll take a look at it. If it's a lot cheaper than the GM Chassis enamel, I'll give it a try. It's going to be a driver anyway so I don't have to worry about judging points!

If you want durability and what will retain it's appearance, get some Centari Pitch Black (That's the Dupont std black color) and some flattener. I used about 15% by volume flattener before thinning, but you can experiment to get the right gloss or lack of. Remember, it will never get glossier but will tend to get flatter with age from engine heat, chemicals, cleaning, etc.

Mike72ss Nov 1st, 02, 8:08 PM Mike, this summer I painted the underside and firewall of my Chevelle with black PPG Delstar with their flattening agent to get 60% gloss. Looks great! Come by and take a look.

Unclepennybags Nov 2nd, 02, 2:39 PM After thinking about it, I decided it is best to keep everything Dupont. I'll print this up and talk to the paint dude in Dearborn.
Thanks!
