I had a set of lifters break the tie bar and ruin the engine. The cam was fine, although I didn't like having to change the distributor gear annually.

i ordered the doug herbert roller cam kit.came with comp roller lifters, comp springs, comp retainers, comp pushrods (which i had to send back) to long. then they sent me manley pushrods.my cam has a 619 lift. 781 heads. trw forged pistons,2 bolt 454 bored to 468.arp all through. windage tray, roller rockers. this along with a built turbo 400/3600 stall converter.411,posi. in a 1969 chevelle to try to beat my sons 1994 z28 camaro. but anyway i did have a problem getting the right length pushrod. my short pushrods (is that exhaust or intake?) are just barely above the guide plates. but when i check them with the blue manley pushrod checker ,thats where they should be.i am afraid that when i start this motor(its still new on stand ) (n.o.s.) hee hee. that the rocker arms are going to hit the guide plates. and yes i know that the blue manley push rod checker has two sides, one EXH and one INT.

Not to change the subject but I would suggest you give your "pushrod checkers" the task of paperweight & not use it for checking pushrod length.
In my opinion that thing is about as useless as tits on a boar hog :D

Get some checking pushrods & look at the pattern on the tip of the valve.
I do not have a clue what that thing is designed for but it does not come anywhere close to correct with any rocker arm I have used.

i do have the big block push rod checkers set. it is a set of two push rods that the ends screw off. that way you can shorten or lengthen the rod to the size you need, then measure and order that size push rod. my problem is that when i used the short push rod tool to measure the short push rod , the tool was to long, even with it screwed all the way in. and to make it even worse i unscrewed the tip off and the push rod was still to long. so you can get an idea as to how short my (short) push rods are. and my concern. is this a common problem with retrofit roller cams in b.b chevys? or is my setup messed up somehow? ANYBODY?

Didn't you say in your post you were using the Manley tool? This is not an adjustable pushrod

Is this a solid roller or hyd roller?
All hyd rollers use pushrods that are about a half inch shorter.
Most solid roller lifters I know of use close to standard length pushrods except some small block tall body ones designed for use with a rev kit

If it is a solid with Herbert lifters I can't tell you as I do not use any solid roller lifter except Isky.
In my opinion this is not a place to skimp. There really is a reason they are expensive ;)

hi again, it is a hyd-roller cam.comp roller lifters. i used the adjustable push rods first . and when i had to unscrew the end off the short rod tocheck, and that was still not short enough i then bought a blue plastic manley push rod checker.with that you can see how much longer or shorter push rod you need.

You probably will not be able to use your length chcking pushrods with the hyd. roller, unless they were designed for hyd roller. Sounds like you have a regula BBC pushrod setup which will be tooooo long for a Hyd. roller lifter. in a BB
