: Blatant Fake '68 SS?
ehjorten Jun 30th, 05, 4:41 PM Check-out this posting on Craig's List:

Now, I am not entirely up on my '68 Trivia, but the side trim wasn't on an SS in '68 was it? I know it wasn't on a '69. I would assume its earlier brother was the same.
If I am right, please everyone flag the post and we can get it removed.
thunderstruck507 Jun 30th, 05, 4:49 PM 68 can be verified by VIN, someone might have like the trim?
d1_bradley Jun 30th, 05, 5:23 PM Looks correct for a '68. " Genuine '68 SS-396 Chevelles had chrome trim pieces on the lower body sides both in front of, and BEHIND the rear wheels. The non-SS versions had the same trim in front of the rear wheels, but not behind them. None of the '68 Chevelle or El Camino models came with wheel well trim." from the how to ID a SS on this site.
bubba68ss Jun 30th, 05, 5:43 PM Looks like a nice 68. Wrong wheels though, but who cares. $18000 might be stretching it... but its close
ehjorten Jun 30th, 05, 7:02 PM So...sounds like it could be a real SS with minor errors in restoring the vehicle (i.e. the wheel well trim and also the rims). I checked the price through Classic Car Price Guide and I was surprised to see that a Factory Air vehicle with a 396/350HP engine, 4-speed, and Bench seat had an average retail value of 27,000 and a low of 13,833. Man our Chevelles are getting expensive. I hope we don't go the way of the Corvettes, but I am glad that I have held on to mine and kept good care of it. Although...I never plan on selling.
Thanks for the clarification on the '68.
Dean Jun 30th, 05, 7:58 PM Wrong wheels?
Seems like almost every Chevell in existance has the wong wheels now days, if you mean "not like original".
1966_L78 Jun 30th, 05, 8:09 PM Shouldn't the valve covers be chrome?

Yep.

BULKSS Jun 30th, 05, 9:42 PM I dont see a power brake booster. What were the brake options in 68?

Non-power drums were standard in 68
That car has been for sale for a LONG time. IIRC it is a 138 car. $18k isn't too far out of line considering the market. The wheel well trim WAS available on 68s including the SS. As stated above 68 SS396s had side trim to the rear bumper. The concours and 300 chevelles did not have the side trim like the 69 SS396. The short pieces that would replace the side trim like the 69 SS396 are also a hard to find part for 68s(it is shorter than the 69 Ss piece). The 68 SS396 had the full hockey stick.
here is a pic of a fellow members car also with the wheel well chrome:

red68chevL Jul 1st, 05, 10:29 AM Jeff,
Are you sure about the wheelwell moldings being a 68 option?
I only question this because I have an NOS set and I mentioned that they were '68-'69 in a thread. I was scolded.....
Here is the thread, it was being discussed on.

I would really like a straight answer on this... Anyone? everyone seems to say yes and no, but, but, but.....
Yes,
On page 190 of the assembly manual it shows the driver front fender pic for installation and it is listed for 135, 136, 137 AND 138 models :)
GM part number 3920149 and 3920150
red68chevL Jul 1st, 05, 1:50 PM Thanks Jeff. I will certainly check out my assembly manual when I get home. Now, if we could just get everyone else on TC to believe it as well.......
