: True SS, Okay so I should know better...

I know, no way for sure without Paper, and I should have "searched", but didn't have the time today...

Looking at a 1970 "SS" Chevelle... "Supposedly" an SS , but now a SB. Has discs but no posi (not sure if its a 12-bolt).

Has round guages and tach, etc...

Currently has a 350 and not BB...

No big deal, a clone is fine with me, as long as I know thats what it is...

The car is an automatic...
All SS automatics would be a TH400, correct?

I figure a clone would likely have TH350 and corresponding driveshaft, where a "real" SS (even with a swapped small block) might still have the TH400, etc...

Fuel line differences? Return line only on BB???

Going to look at it in a few hours...

Thanks,

Tony

Buckets/console/tilt/factory guages&Tach/domed hood/cream Yellow/Cragar rims... Asking $13K... Figure it sounds okay for even a clone...

You can skroll around and get all the tells.

Sounds like a nice car/price one way or another if the paint and body are good.

Lets see some pics!

Other small things you might look at are the sunvisors (ss were connected to a rubber piece in middle of roof), sway bars, look for covered holes that would signal the dash is from monte carlo, large radiator

that's all I can really think of right now

The seller said there was some light surface rust, which might be good. I figure if the paint is old enough that there is surface rust, then any rot/bubbles should be really obvious...

Yeah, I figured a nice clone with buckets/console is probably worth that much... I have a few extra BBs lying around, and might even have a bare 1970 12-bolt housing...

Its kind of at the limit as far as my price range (I usually look more for the total projects), but at least if its enjoyable "as-is", then it might be nice...

Don't have a digital camera with me today...

Try and look for a VIN number on the engine and trans, even though the engine hjas "supposedly" been change... Also, Rear axle code as well.

Must be 12 bolt doesn't have to be posi.
Clear turn signal lenses on front not yellow.
Boxed rear lower control arms.
Round not oval rear bushing on front lower control arm.
Rear sway bar.
Gauge lettering should have a green tint not white.
SS not Malibu tags on interior door panels if was 396. Maybe Malibu if was a 454
SS grille is black, SS tag in center, Chevelle tag in lower right
Hood pins
TH400 if an auto

Any or all of these things could have been replaced over time.

also if its a 70 look for evidence of chrome trim along the top of doors and fenders (all malibus had it, but it was often removed)

the 70ss in my backyard would have been that cream color from the factory...i really like it

if you find proof its a clone, I would try to talk him down at least a little

I dunno how things are in your area but a clone here would have to have great paint and body to pull over $10k and thats with a BB between the fenders...

I don't think all SS had hood pins, i think those came with the cowl induction setup

I think the Non-induction cowl hoods (just the buldge), for 1970 did not have Pins and Cowl Induction Hoods did have them. Not sure, but that is what I think I have read before.. Also, the F41 (Rear Boxed arms and rear sway bar). Was not standard on any SS!

Maybe I am wrong? I don't think so, but there is a possibility. So take what I say lightly

Good luck Tony.

Outside of all the norms mentioned, maybe take a look at the steering rag joint - pressed vs. bolted as has been mentioned here a few times. Or rip it apart in the guys drive way and hunt for the buildsheet. ;)

for sure. and if it aint there, drop the gas tank. If its aint there, pull the inner door panels rear and front and look there. If it aint there rip out the seats, tear out the carpet and check there. If it aint there.....run away cause the guys gonna be PO'd when he comes back out of the house and sees the car in pieces. :D

Early 70s without cowl induction did not have the pins. After April?, they all had hood pins. F41 was standard on all SS, except El Camino, starting in 70.

Any of the bolt on suff might have been replaced a half a dozen times in the last 35 years.

Thats what I thought with the BB and 12-bolt... But it appears the car was a bench seat originally (int #795)... It now has buckets/console/tilt...

I started another thread, nothing what I saw...

Big decision...
