Finally,

Got my act together and made it to the track. I chose to go to our local 1/8 mile bracket program. I figured that would be a good way to start with a new engine combo. And I basically haven't raced in a couple of years.

Temp was around 80, clear day, but I have no idea what the air density was. We are at about 300ft above sea level, but rarely get air better than about 1000ft.

I left the engine in exactly the tune as it was on the dyno. I wasn't after the last tenth, I just wanted to see how the car...and the driver responded to the increase in power.

Of course my plan was to take it easy first pass, but that went right out the window when I lit the bottom stage bulb! Ha!

First pass netted a 6.55 @ 104.5
Next came a 6.51 @ 104.7
Then a 6.52 @ 104.8
And first round a 6.52 @ 104.8 again.
I had dialed a 6.49 assuming the temp would drop a bit....but my finger in the air weather station wasn't quite calibrated. I had a .03 light, but couldn't run the number. My opponent was dead on. Story of my life. Oh well.

60ft ranged from 1.46 to a 1.48....gotta like new slicks. 10x29 Hoosiers. Good tires.

I could tell that the carb wasn't dialed quite right in the accel pump area. The car just felt a bit soft leaving. Not a bog per se, just flat. I did no tuning. So I'm thinking I need to tweak the carb a bit, and it will probably like a step or two bigger jets.

All in all, I'm very pleased. Fastest I've ever been, and I'm dang close to that magical get in trouble 6.39 in the 1/8 et.

Need to mention, I drove it there, ran on pump gas, and drove it home! I'm not exactly sure where this will put me in the 1/4, but I'm guessing near 10.3, and that was my goal.

So far so good! I'll post more as I begin to tweak the thing!

Ron

Hi Ron,
That's great.

What you do have for a suspension? I'm about ready to get my 491 going in a few weeks in my Nova which should be around 650 HP. Looks like you are hooking pretty well already.

Hey Ron, do you care to give the full details on your motor? Thanks, sounds like its running pretty good to me

that's pretty darn consistent for someone that 'hasn't really raced in a couple of years!' Impressive #'s, and consistency!

Congrats, Ron. 6.51 should easily be good enough for 10.30 assuming your car pulls the top half of the track. Here's one of my runs for comparison:
60' - 1.495
330' - 4.276
1/8 - 6.624
MPH 104.19
1,000' - 8.669
1/4 - 10.413
MPH - 128.74
D/A 941'

I suspect you will be closer to 10.2x ;)

Nice! Looks like your already in the 10.2x range if you can 60ft just a hair better. I'm sure you'll find the optimal jetting at the track will be different than the dyno so you've got room for further tuning/improvement and that doesn't even count the better air thats coming.

My best pass went
1.42
6.535@105.1
10.31@128.9.

I'm at work now but I can send you the full incrementals tonight if you want them.

Hi Ron,
Very nice :beers: congratulations
Did you happen to weigh your ride with you in it?
Just using the old quick & dirty formula you are looking at 10.20 - 130
I'd say outstanding for the first outing with a new combo,,,

Thanks for the comments guys!

Let's see......the car weighs between 3500 and 3550 with me in it depending on how full the tank is. I try to race with it full.

The rear suspension is mono leaf springs from Landrum, along with a rather unusual ladder bar setup that has a sliding front pivot. Some of the stock class racers around here use them, and I found mine from a friend who had them on a 12 sec street car. I modified them quite a bit. I need to get a picture, they are hard to describe.

Engine was described elswhere here, but basically: it has approx 9.5:1 CR, AFR 305 CNC chamber heads, a custom comp street roller on a billet core, .660/.667 260/266 110, a Brodix HV2001 intake with a Quick Fuel Dominator carb. 2" hooker comp headers, 3" exh with an x pipe and tailpipes out behind the rear tires. Exh is Dr. Gas.
TH400, old 10" B&M race converter, 4.10 12 bolt with a spool.

The engine made 700 on the dyno, but I imagine with a full exh and an engine driven fan, it's somewhat less in the car.

The thing is so quiet, I can hear the carb going down the track. And always the other guy of course. Last night though...they were all behind me.

That's about it!

Specail thanks to Mike Lewis for parts and advice!

And Joe...Novas are cool arent they! Happy Birfday to you as well.

Ron
