: Why are people so ignorant!?!?!

So today during work when I was taking the trash out (work at an ice cream store). I noticed a 71 chevelle sitting in the Pub next door. Well I was looking at the car and noticing how botched looking it was and how incorrect it was. Well the guy comes outside and I introduce myself and talk to him a little bit and get the background on the car. Here’s what he says to me:

Its a 350 "juiced up"
Its painted meditraianian blue
Its 100% "SS" package equipment
He verified the VIN with GM to see that its an SS using the first 4 digits

So anyhow let me explain how this car looked to you I wish I took a picture. He had some "custom" welded fender skirts welded onto the front and back fenders that stuck out a good 3 inches so his "huge" tires could fit under it. (They were not very big though??) The car had the worst paint job ive ever seen it looked like he painted it in his barn and he told me it was a NEW PAINT JOB. Well the centerline on the trunk that corresponds to where the stripes are placed here’s how it looked. The left stripe was about 2" away from center and the right side was about 1" from center and it was very noticeable that the cars stripes were way off. It had a cracked up grill and hood clips. He had a 5 point harness in the car with an automatic and factory bucket seats. The windows were super tinted and it had a vinyl top. The car had to be jacked up a good 3.5' in the back end and had these HUGE exhaust tips on it. He had his rusty crager rims on it. Anyhow,

we started to talk about his "SS" package. He told me he was 100% sure it was an SS because GM told him so. I said well do you have a build sheet? And he says "no I don’t but GM sent me a paper that says it’s an SS they verified the VIN". So I replied there’s no way you could get verification from the VIN the only way you can is if the car is Canadian. Well it’s not a Canadian car he didn’t even know they made them there. So we keep talking about his "SS" package and I said well does it have disk brakes? And his reply was no it had drums but I changed them to disks and I was said to the guy... "Uh, all SS cars came with disk brakes as a standard package" and he says well I put them on the body is SS.

THIS GUY IS STARTING TO REALLY **** ME OFF.

So I say to him well you said you called GM and they told you that the car was SS because they verified the first 4-5 digits. Well I replied to the guy they only did that on the early cars... 64, 65, 66 etc. And he tells me know they can. (I was thinking to myself no F**#$)*# way you idiot) If you could verify the VIN through GM everyone on chevelle tech would have done it. To top it all off...

This guy was talking down to me, yes im 18 and I own a chevelle but I sure as hell know a lot more than you do. Even though he had his head so far up his ass he wouldn’t believe me that his car was a plain Jane Malibu small block... (Even though the SS's came with 396's from 68+)... This guy was really starting to **** me off at this point because he was being so ignorant and arrogant. So I told him to give me the number for the place to verify the VINS because that sounds great id love to find out my cars an SS and im sure the other 3,000+ people on chevelle tech who can’t find it would love to know also... The guy says I don’t know the number but you can call this parts house (never heard of the name) and they will give you the number to the GM place that will tell you if its infect SS by the VIN number.

I said okay, and asked him if he had a pen. No pen and he didn’t look in his car he says “ill come into Graeters (place I work) some time and give it to you then.” GOD THIS GUY IS STUPID. I turn and walk away and he goes to his ugly butchered up 71...:angry:

I even bet the guy 400 dollars you couldn’t verify an SS car by the first 4 digits in 71... Oh well idiot. I even told him how I completely restored my car. A basic frame up restoration with all new sheet metal. But it’s okay to talk down to a “kid”.

Sorry about the rant these kinds of people really tick me off. And his car was ugly to me... so it’s all good.

You started to describe my car... except for the fender part. ;) Well, it was that way when I bought it about 5 years ago.

But I'm not nearly as clueless as that guy is.
Ignorance really is bliss. John Wayne had it all wrong when he said stupid people have a harder life. To us they do, but they are oblivious to that fact and just carry on like a June Bug that keeps smacking into a window to get to the light.

BTW, that link in your signature is to some small picture of swirley blue stuff and the word "baygents". Is that like a night club in San Francisco? :D

It can be tough to be a young gun around nerfs, especially when you expect others to conform to your ideals.

Its really okay how each person enjoys their car. They might not do it your way, and for sure you will not do it their way.

The legend of high performance cars attracts an unusual number of low performance minds. Image is everything, especially when substance is difficult to "prove" - like in a parking lot encounter. Cliff Claven was not just a sit-com writers dream, he is apparently found wherever car nuts gather. A kind of common drama played out by bit actors who believe they are witty and charismatic when they are actually dreadful boors.

I've gotten very used to mindlessly saying "yeah, yeah" and nodding with a smile when the self made tales of rarities and glory emerge. I actually got a big suprise a couple of months ago when talking to a prospect over the phone and he said that he used to have a fast car years ago, I just said "yeah, yeah, that's nice". Well, a little while after he showed up he said he brought some pictures of the "fast" car to share with me. He opened up an old photo scrapbook with a metal plaque stamped something like "1968 Popular Hot Rodding Championship Drags". Inside were pictures of the first full body '68 Corvette Funny Car, the Mako Shark (not an original name, his team played off the fame of the show/prototype Corvette that spawned the then new '68 Corvette body style). Yep, you guessed it, my customer was the driver in those pictures! Don Cullinan for those who may have followed the West Coast drag scene from '68 to '70.

Other than that one time, I've mostly found B.S. when the boasts of fast and desireable cars emerge. It can be strange behavior really. But I suppose if a guy doesn't feel very important at home or work this is one way they can stroke their ego.

Okay, so some people like to do things with their cars that others don't care for...so what. I've seen Chevelles turned into everything from BBQs to 4x4s. If you want to talk about how ignorant people are, you might want to consider taking a few spelling classes before you end up looking like the ignorant one....

Had a guy in the shop about a week ago or so and I asked him if he was going to the car show in Pismo Beach. He started rambling about the 1966 Impala he had back in 1968 that was sold from Baldwin Chevrolet, and had a big engine in it, (he didn't remember what it was), but he was very sure that it had 525 horsepower. I never questioned him about the horsepower, but I asked him if he was sure of the year. He said, oh yeah it was a 66 Impala.

I just kept saying yeah, yeah......525 horsepower ..........huh ? all original too........wow..... yeah yeah.....

I knew there was some truth to his story, I was just trying to put 2 and 2 together.

Was Baldwin Chevrolet doing special race prep on Impalas in 1966 ?
I'm thinking he had one of the few 427/425hp cars ???

I did not mean for my article to be directly insulting the guy for something he likes. I respect their decisions whether I like them or not. I was trying to explain how some people cannot for the life of them accept anything that anyone else says to them. Finally, I don’t understand why you would criticize me for making a few spelling errors, that makes you sound very arrogant. Especially if your attacking me for spelling ignorant wrong once in the title.

I’m not sure you understand what ignorant means. In no way am I trying to boost my ego either, sorry if what I wrote/described came off in an egotistical way.

I agree with some of the others. Why even waste your time? Why would you let it make you mad? Talk Chevelles with him, and if he's a bonehead, wish him a pleasant morning/afternoon/evening and walk away. If he's enjoying his car, that's all that really matters. Don't scrutinize it. If he tries to pawn it off as a real SS, they'll be plenty of others who'll beyatch slap him into reality.

What does ACES 1's signature line say? Something like, "Never argue with an idiot, or you end up looking like an idiot, too."

Great advice.

These are the parts of your post that throw me off. What's done is done, and there's no way to change the past.

I'm not posting to talk down to you or ridicule you in any way. I'd simply like to give you a little something to think about.

First of all, nothing this guy said or did harmed you or anyone else in any way.

Second, by telling him he was wrong (however you did it), you embarrassed him, and put him on the spot BIG TIME. After that point, he was just trying to save face, and you wouldn't give him a way out.

Third, you let something as insignificant as this get under your skin (see quoted lines above). He probably got a little angry with you because you corrected everything he said. In my opinion, his anger was much more justified than yours. He did nothing to harm you or your ego. You tore his ego down piece by piece, and there was no reason to do this except to stroke your own ego.

Furthermore, you say the guy just exited a Pub. You took a chance of upsetting a drunk, which could easily have escalated into a violent situation.

Again, I'm not intending this as a "flame". Just want you to think about different ways to handle such situations in the future. Sure, this poor guy has an ugly car and knows nothing about it. Sure he fabricates fairytales attempting to portray some sort of an illusion about how great a car it really is. But that doesn't do any harm to anyone but himself. And that harm is minimal.

Try to learn to look for something good in people, no matter how stupid you think they are. At least give them the dignity of telling their harmless stories without insulting them and calling them liars.

[sarcasm with a smile]I'm sure you've never told anyone a lie or two to boost your ego or try and fit in. I know I haven't. Especially when I was a teenager.[/sarcasm with a smile] ;)

I never talk clone/true SS to anyone about their car. In some cases they know and some they don't. Either way it sure isn't important enough to me to get into a p***ing contest over. Only time I've ever discussed it at a show or cruise is if someone asks me about my car.

Bowtie-72

I have worked for a MAJOR performance parts company in their traveling display for several years (have since stopped for now).

I often (several times daily) encountered someone who has the ultra rare 69 ZL1 or COPC or the only '55 chev ever sold brand new with a big-block (not kidding you!).

Most of these people come up and just want to brag, and stroke thier ego. They just want to try to impress someone who actually knows about cars, because most non-car guys could care less. Think about how every Olds 350 is now a "rocket350" and every PontiaC motor suddenly becomes a "super duty". They just want to be admired.

I am still amazed at how many cars one person can own in his lifetime. A kid was about 17 and had claimed to have owned several GTOs, 4 Vettes, 2 hemi cougars (gave up trying to figure that one out-he said it was a rare factory option).

I was told by one of the other traveling reps that you get real used to smiling and nodding, but listen because you can still make a friend and customer. He often would let the person say their piece, and ask what parts they need for now, and often would make a sale.

I also would get the guy who asks why we don't still stock the ultra rare whatever it is because he needs one for a car he's trying to copy. I often referred him to a NOS supply shop around here, who probably has one.

It boils down to this: A cornered cur will fight his way out, give him an escape and he will take it; block every exit, and expect to leave scarred.

No sense even bringing it up IMO.
As soon as you do, you have insulted their intelligence.
They are going to be offended, wether it is right then or later on.

not sure why it bothered you so much. The only way I would agrue the points with him was if I was trying to buy the car, and he wanted "SS" money for a "malibu" car. I've learned 2 things when it comes to argueing with someone about their car

1. If I'm not 100% sure they are wrong, I keep my mouth shut
2. If I am 100% sure they are wrong, I keep my mouth shut

Jun 29th, 05, 10:17 AM
No offense, but it sounds to me like you were really just stroking your own ego. Why in the world would you even bother going over to this guy and start quoting options and such for any other reason.

Not every person that owns a muscle car, cares to find out about what it came out of the factory with. This guy probably bought himself a chevelle SS for pretty darn cheap a few years ago, and is proud as heck to drive his SS. You painted him into a corner, and he found a way to get out, by saying GM confirmed it.

The next time you find yourself in a situation like this, try to be the bigger man, and just nod and agree and later tell your friends a good story. Everybody walks away happy then.

I agree with most of the posters around that when I hear a ridiculous or impossible story about classic cars I just nod my head and smile. Sometimes I even play along and see what other lies they spout.
The only time I got in an argument with some knucklehead (at a car show) was when he was trying to tell me that my Chevelle was a '68 and not a '69. Basically he told me he owned several Chevelles and he knew mine was a '68, and called me a fool for not knowing what mine was. I pulled out the damn registration and showed him the year. He finally shut up and walked away.

....And where is the rule that if you own a classic car, you have to be an expert on every little piece of minutiae that surrounds it/the hobby (eventhough some are more interested in the details than others)? Some people like driving an old car around, and that is good enough for them.

My real question is which person's name was on the title to the car? If you don't like A) the car or B) the person who OWNS the car- walk AWAY- it really is that easy. I agree with others who think he was yanking your chain....

I am not uptight about my car. I often join in and LOVE, on occasion, to see if I can get a rise out the guys that I can tell are the hardcore purists when they are sitting around having a hardcore discussion about "correct colors of firewall and driveshaft chalk markings" and such around my car. heck, I even join them in criticizing my own car from time to time as if i am not the owner. It is, truly, fun for me to see what I can get out of folks that treat Chevelles as though they are the wright brothers plane on display. Purists, guys that take these cars more serious than a heart attack and have a realy dry sense of humor or lack one altogether are the absolute BEST targets. I'll either join them in picking apart my own car or walk up to theirs and say things like a bunch of us TC'ers heard from a guy at a Redding, CA show "Sweet Chevelle! My brother had a documented 63SS with a 396 and a 5spd just like it that he bought new from the dealer!"

I turn this into my own little game of "punked" but sometimes the punch line or disclosure never comes because people get to PO'd and involved and I feel a greater personal victory in leaving them that way.

So, yes indeed, my man....the joke could have indeed been on you. ;)

Hey Harry, if I want any s*** out of you I'll unscrew your head and dip it out! Sorry man, Rich isn't around so I'm practicing on you. Toms no fun, when you insult him he thinks it's a compliment. :beers:

Beer milkshakes. BTDT.
My advice - DONT go there and do that. :D

Try beer sorbet instead. Just put plain beer in an ice cream maker, no milk or sugar. You can stop stirring a little sooner and have a beer slushie too. Tastes great on a hot day!

Honestly, do you KNOW it was a 71 Chevelle? Maybe a 72? Maybe a front clip change? The 72 SS 454 IS verified by the VIN, and really common to have a replacement engine, even a 350, swapped in at some point...

Maybe the guy recently bought the car "as-is", and he knows all the faults but is tired of so-called "experts" telling him what's wrong...

I also heard there is a place (DPA in Ohio?) that can tell you if your cars a COPO (or maybe just an SS) ;)

You picked apart his car because you "didn't like the way it looked" and you're calling him arrogant?

I'm another of the young 'uns on here and I still think that's the most immature/arrogant things a car owner can do.

People do that kinda crap all the time over my car, i either ignore them or ask to see theirs cause only.1% of car owners have a chance of theirs being perfect, but that doesn't stop their arrogance from taking over and giving them the idea to bitch about cars that aren't theirs.

Besides that, they all can't be trailor queens and museum litter.

I did nothing of the sort. I did not tell him his car was ugly because thats my opinion and i expressed my opinon on here in writing. Finally, i did not intentionaly go and "attack" this guy out of the blue. We started talking chevelles and then i asked him about it being a true SS. I belive you should re-read the post before you jump to conclusions.

I'd just like to say, maybe this was the poster's way of yanking your chains. Just like MM mentioned earlier, he'll talk bad about his own car just to get them talking....something to think about ;)

Anyways... always gonna be people out there like that... just be glad you do know your stuff...

I meant you picked it apart in your mind, I never said you told him what you thought. Point was your post made you sound like you were what you were complaining about.

What is the point of even arguing with someone that mixed up? It's like teaching calculus to a retarded person and then telling everyone in the teacher's lounge how incapable he is.

These posts makes me glad I got rid of my El Camino!! I got so caught up in what was correct and what wasn't the car wasn't fun anymore. I hope that POS rots in the junkyard!!! Too rusty..

If peoples' attitudes about cars and parts are ruining your perception of this hobby, get another hobby. This is true, IMHO, for numbers matching, pro street, g-machines, day 2, etc.

Who is this person putting pressure on "everybody" to use all date coded stuff, to paint it this way, don't use this wheel, make sure it looks correct, etc.? No one CARES what you do with your car! If you bought it, and your name is on the title, do what you want! Someone may have an opinion about it for about 5 minutes, but they FORGET YOU AND YOUR CAR as quickly as they worried about date codes, wheel flares...Date codes and others opinions ruining this hobby for you is YOUR problem not the hobby's problem. The only reason you let you that rusty El Camino become a burden to you by worrying about correct stuff is that is what YOU wanted out of this hobby. IMHO, after seeing pics of that Elky, it is a classic case of being overwhelmed by an out of control project- that thing really had more rust than I personally have ever seen. More importantly, some people are happy just to own ANY car..

All this correct stuff being important is only true, IMHO, for VALUE purposes- as in monetary value. Hmmmm....Let's see. If you want to SELL your car as a COPO, but can't prove its a COPO, then THAT is where all this correct stuff comes in to play. You can throw on all the date code stuff you want, but its NOT a COPO PERIOD. Correct is worth its weight ONLY when you can back it up with other stuff.

If some guy is yanking your chain and trying to goad you into a p*ssing match, and you buy it hook, line and sinker, is that HIS problem our YOURS?!

 At any rate I'm glad I sold it, and the next time I do buy a classic, I'll make sure I have enough money to get a decent starter project and not some rusted out beater that I pulled out of a field. Good learning experience yes, resto project, no.

I'm glad this thread is here. I spent 45 minutes trying to tell a crane operator how to rig his block for it's heaviest load today. Neighbor had the crane there for his new addition, prebuilt walls. After the crane's owner left, his buddy took over, and was to rig it for a heavy lift job tomorrow. He's got 2 pulleys under the main boom pulley, and 1 on the block. He was already though the block and the live end back on the boom. I tell him, just run the live end through one of the pulleys on the boom, then back to the block, and that's it, since he's only got one on the block. He says, matter-of-factly, that I'm wrong. I had a couple of beers, watching, even helping him set it up TWICE his way, both not working out. After the second try, he was almost there, but had the live end doubled back to the boom. As he sat there in the cab, I pulled the pin, moved the live end to the block, and told him to try it. It worked. :D :clonk: I'm in the wrong field. I rig stuff quite a bit at work, but this guy makes more than me. He's a good operator, but he should learn a little more about his own equipment.
