I've seen real old cars that have surface rust on their body panels. I know when they get media blasted there is still pitting left in the metal, what do you do about this? I know you can't paint over it like that, so what do you do?

If there's a body filler involved, what brand do you recommend?

Thanks for the reply! Can you tell me where I can buy this?
I assume it's used the same way spackle is to a wall. You put some over the hole, and then sand it smooth later. Am I correct?

It depends on how deep these pits are. The best way to fill minor ones is to spray an acid containing primer (etching primer) like Martin Senour #8827 (vinyl wash) or #8847 (TrioPrime), Dupont Variprime, PPG DPX172 and then a urethane primer like M-S #5100,5101,5102,5103 Tecprime, Dupont UroPrime, PPG K200. These will easily fill most rust pits and this way you have that "converter" etching primer on the metal to stop that rust that is still at the bottom of the pits from growing.
Applying a polyester filler like glazing putty will be a shorter lived repair.
Not to say that it can't work, the etching primer is just the better way to go. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

MartinSr is right. You have to have a good bond to the metal for a lasting paint job. If you try to use filler 1st, you'll be really bummed out 6 months after painting....

only problem is self etch prime wont fill deep pits and you should not apply filler over primer.i suggested evercoat assuming the pits were totally clean like after media blasting or an acid bath.Filling deep pits with primer isn't always the answer. if rust is still present then you should use a self etching prime.

I'm referring to the metal after media blasting, but when there are tiny "craters" and pits in the metal from surface rust before.

I think from what Shawn is discribing, urethane primer would easily fill it.

The first thing you should do after a media balsting job like that is to knock the high spots down with some board sanding, then acid prime and then carry on as usual.

However, the pitting may be more than just pitting. If the rust has eaten a huge crater into the metal it may make more sence to cut and weld and then do what ever your going to do for paint.

MartinSr is very correct and this man knows his paint and how to do things, i have found what works very well for me is Variprime or similiar self etch or DP90 by PPG for first application then Urethane primer such asDupont URO ,then block the Uro ,when sraight and smooth to point that you want apply a good sealer and apply your top coat. just a note if you have a NAPA store in your area they have good products t reasonable prices.
