: 71 Chevelle light switch design-icon or plain?
braymerbill Jun 27th, 05, 11:54 PM My 71 chevelle, of which I am but the second owner, has the "no design" rubber switch for the cigarette lighter but has the "light icon" rubber switch for the headlights. Anyone know whether the 71 chevelles were "plain" as to the headlights, lighter and radio or what?
Thanks
Bill
S402 Jun 28th, 05, 12:49 AM I ordered my 1972 El Camino from the factory and have had it ever since. It came with the light icon on the light switch, a flame on the lighter and sound and tuning icons on the radio knobs. Since the 1971s and 1972s were so similar I assume that the icons should have been on yours also.

I thought so too. But the OPGI catalogue shows the "no design" for the 71 and the "light icon" for the 72 as to the headlight. So I need to find someone like you that is a first owner of a 71.

ZOOMIN71 Jun 28th, 05, 4:26 PM I was also curious about this. My 71 has no icons on any of the knobs.
I'm the second owner of my 71. I can't see the original owner changing all of the knobs.

I found a broken "plain" knob in the console. It had to go somewhere. I believe it might have been on the light switch. Perhaps the first owner preferred the iconic knob when they switched. Since the original radio is gone I do not have that to fall back on. Meanwhile I believe the 71 actually had plain knobs since your s does. Maybe some one else will respond.
Thanks

Mike72ss Jun 28th, 05, 8:46 PM Even though I do not own a 71 Chevelle, I believe the answer to your question will be like many others: It depends on where the car was built and when the car was built. If you asked 10 original owners of 71 Chevelles the same question, you will get different answers based on the things I just mentioned. There is no one correct answer. Just my .02.

pretty sure there were no icons in 71...strictly a 72 (actually i was thinking it was 73 and later) thing.. 71's had the largish convex with chrome trim
now i see the rubber lighter thing too....i'd bet theyre both wrong, differently
welp, i just checked OPG cat, and it shows the icon knobs are for 71 and 72...lol, just goes to show you how wierd my car is, it was made in canada and is registered as a 71 and built in 71 according to the vin plate...but has 4 headlights and far as i can tell, everything else is 70 vintage, now i know that includes the knobs...though i must say, i do like what appears to most as a "200 mph" speedometer
thunderstruck507 Jun 30th, 05, 5:35 PM mine has a rubber no icon lighter and i havent seen one like it in any other 70 or 71s...all the others have a black dome looking one with a metal ring
mine is black with a chrome plastic ring and the middle is indented in a cup like shape

one last thought: the light switch in most cases would probably be correct as its pretty difficult for the average citizen to remove and/or replace those
