: How rigid (side to side) should hood hinges be?

I had a bad day today. Without getting into details, the car fell off the jack and as it did, the hood (which was open) rocked to the side as it closed. It actually overlapped the fender and the edge of the hood gouged the paint. I'm not concerned with the paint really, but should the hood hinges allow that much side to side wobble? It moves about a half inch to each side.

I don't think that it should. I am having the same issue, and I just ordered some new hinges this week.

Mine flops around too, I just thought that was the way they were.

Post back if they seem to stiffen yours up, I may have to put that on my Cheistmas list http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

I thought you guys were nuts because I remember those hoods having quite a bit of sideways movement. So I just threw on my slippers and checked out my Skylarks hood. It is pretty dang solid. I don't think it moves more than a 1/8". BUT, I do think that a '69 has a much larger hood and maybe it would give the hinges a little more of a workout.

Oh yeah, and Tim, I am sorry to hear about your mishap. But, I am glad that it is only the car that is damaged and not YOU. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

1/8" might be ok. I will see how my new ones do and let you know.
Tim, Martin is right. Use the Jacks man, please.

Thanks for the concern and checking your hinges out. I do use jack stands. I was in the process of jacking the car up to put the stands under. I didn't trust jacks before, and I surely don't now. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif Even the stands give me the willies.
