: Funny '72 ignition wiring.

I swapped my original points for another distributor yesterday, only to find that the yellow wire that was supposed to be there going to the starter was in fact, pink, attached to the spade connector with the white resistor wire. And when I pulled the bulkhead to replace the resister wire, I found the other end was pink as well, and looked like it may have a thick white stripe.

I found that there was a full 12v with the way this was wired in the run position (about 11.5v with car off) so Im at a loss as to why it is this way. The car is very stock, the wiring harness appears to be the factory unit and never modified.

The car is a '72, 402 BB auto with AC.

Anyone seen anything like this?

12v in run position, do you mean car actually running or key in run, engine off? Car off, points open or module not providing a grd to coil it will read 12v whether it's a resisitive wire or not. You must have a complete path to ground to have voltage drop, only then will you see a reduced voltage at the coil with the resistive wire. If you're reading 12v at coil with engine running then sounds like the resistive wire has been bypassed/replaced.

It was with ignition in run position, not actually started. I tested the wire from the bulkhead connector to the end where it connects to the coil and it showed no resistence that way, so I figure that with the reading of almost 12 volts would mean there was no resistance there.

I recal another thread here not too long ago where someone mentioned theirs was the same way with a pink wire and since the wiring harness appears very stock and to have never been modified I was trying to figure out what was up with it.

I've not seen it. Perhaps when they built the harness they grabbed a different colored wire.

Well the pink wire runs from the coil down to the bulkhead, or seems to since the connector there is a pink wire with what looks like a white stripe. The white cloth resistor wire is there, but I cant figure out where it ends, it goes into the taped harness with the pink wire and then dissapears.

Sounds like someone has been there before you. It may look unmolested but you can buy the non-stick harness tape. After a few years you wouldn't know the difference.

It's not uncommon to find a pink factory installed coil resistance wire on a 72 engine harness. Here's (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/temp72cw.jpg) a pic showing a factory installed pink resistance wire. The car this came from had an HEI dist with a wire from the fuse block IGN terminal. The wires in the pic had been tied back and were covered with black paint. The yellow wire in the pic goes to the start solenoid.

I have another 72 engine harness, for gauge option, that has a black resistance wire. The pink wire resistance is 1.7 ohms the black wire is 1.9 ohms.

OK the wiring I have looks just like that pic, but instead of the yellow wire there, the white cloth covered restister wire is in its place. Maybe someone did do the wiring before, but it just looks too factory to me, since the car is all stock it just doesnt seem like it would have been messed with considering the points dist I took out was the original unit.
