Hello,

Well, although my Chevelle isn't going in for paint yet, I am personally getting ready to repaint my Monte Carlo SS, and was wondering if someone could give me some advice on what to use. I know more about Brian surgery then I do about painting. I did a pretty slick job with the bodywork but when it comes to paint that’s usually when I just send it in to get sprayed. This time, a friend and I have decided to tackle the job. To achieve that high gloss finish what type of paint should I purchase for the job and what type of clear finish should I buy (Brand, Paint Code, Number)(Black Paint). Also, how many coats of clear should I apply? I have already decided that its best to go with a Urethane rather then a Lacquer for its ease of application. I intend to shoot the car in my personal garage without a heat booth.
Thanks for the Help,

Dan

Wow! That would be a lot of info to cover in one post. Do a search on paint, painting and color sanding in this section. Also do a search on basics by MartinSr. There's great info right here, just do a search.
For starters, a paint job will only be as good as what's underneath. Prep is 90% of a quality high gloss paint job.
There are many ways to do a great paint job and you can get 100 different answers from 20 good painters.
Follow the paint manufacter's instructions.
What color are you painting? A solid or metallic or pearl? I would paint a solid color, such as black in a single stage high quality urethane without any clear. It will look deeper W/O the clear, believe me.

Hello,

Thanks for the help. Next site I will hit will be google to look all that up. In the mean time,... just responding to your post the car is going to be a solid black; no metallic. Ill have to look into the single stage. It seems as though it would be a hell of a lot easier.

On the other hand I'm running into a bit of a complication. I decided that it was necessary to primer most of the car. I just hit the hood and the fenders. The paint underneath was sanded to the point where some of the original black was left and some of it was bare metal. The black was also mixed with 3 other paint (the car had flames) Seems as though the flames were Enamel and the rest was Urethane or possibly Lacquer? Anyway,... the primer is lifting in certain areas and I'm not quite sure what to do to correct it or how it will effect the actual paint. Will the whole car have to be sanded to bare metal? Thanks for the help,

Dan
