I just replaced the cam and intake on an otherwise fresh 406 and have a stalling problem. I have a fuel pressure guage that is mounted right at the carb and when cold the engine will fire right up and show 7 to 8 psi on the fuel pressure guage. I got stuck on the road yesterday,so I hesitate to go far with it now. I started it this morning and it showed 7 to 8 psi and I let it idle at 2000 rpms for about 20 minutes. The pressure gradually dropped to zero, most of the drop occurred in the last few minutes. Even at zero psi the engine did not stall, though on the road the other day it did many times. Every time I stalled it I got out and checked the guage. It was zero or fairly close to it.
Is this a vapor lock condition or a bad fuel pump? The pump is an Edelbrock street 110gph pump and has been on this car for several years. Will an electric pump fix this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It could be a bad pump or vapor lock... although vapor lock is mostly a problem after a heatsoak where you shut the engine off and then try to start it again.

Check the fuel tank sock. I'm thinking it may be plugged starving the pump. You could also have crud in the lines. disconnect the hose from the pump inlet and hold it into a bucket with the rear of the car on jacks (car tilted forward). You should get a steady, strong, stream of gas.

Im a little skeptical about the pump. It would be strange to find a mechanical pump that works fine and then after running, slowly deteriorates and stops working...but then pops back to life after you shut er down. How long does it have to be off before the pressure reads ok again? I mean, if it stalls out on you, when you fire it back up is fuel pressure immediately back to normal, or does it need to sit for a bit before it will start back up and run normal? If the tank isnt venting properly, that would not surprise me to see a condition such as you describe. Or, the dirt needs to settle out for a while before it will run right again....then it sucks it back up.

The thing that throws me is the stuff happened with a cam and manifold change. But, at the same time, you did say that this always happened with guage pressure dropping, so it could be the different air/fuel requirements with the new stuff have much more of a prob dealing with the low fuel pressure. Know what I mean. The first thing you need to do is basically trace the lines all the way back and see why and where the fuel flow drops out. Could be the sock, could be tank venting, could be one of the lines or a filter, and maybe it still could be a strange condition with the fuel pump. I would expect that out of an electric pump, but not a mechanical pump though....but still maybe.

I had a similar problem...After about 100miles on the new engine....car was running great and then all of sudden the idle circuit seemed gone...car ran okay, but wouldn't stay idling....took the carb apart and blew out all the areas..couldn't really see anything, but I guess a little piece 'o crap had gotten in there...once I put it back together, now it's kewl..

The stalling thing started prior to the cam/intake change. I had it towed home last August and waited till spring to work on it. When I pulled the intake I had two broken pushrods,so I decided to go through the whole engine and the "while I'm at it" thing happened. The fuel pump is a carry over from the last rendition,as is the distributer(thinking a module problem)The reason I suspect the pump is the pressure readings during the period of stalling. If I let it sit a few hours it will start and run with 7 psi showing.
I didn't think of the tank venting. I capped that line years ago when I first put on that pump.
On another forum, several guys claimed the pressure guages could not be relied on. This is a Summit liquid filled guage.I've pulled the carb apart, checked the fuel filter and everything looks perfect.

You probably can't trust the actual reading, i.e. if it shows 7 PSI it may really be 6 or 8. But when it shows zero chances are you have no pressure so you can trust it that far.

If you plugged the vent lines from the tank to the evap canister chances are you have a vacuum problem in the tank. Take the gas cap off and drive it. If pressure stays good you've found the problem.
