The thread that Chris started on engine vac. brought up a thought that I should look into something. I am running a Ede Perf 2-0 that has never really sat right on the motor. [Don't know the history of the motor by the way - block was never decked unitl I got it, can't say the same about the heads though, we did a .008 clean up cut, but after unshrouding and polishing the chambers the heads wound up at 104CC (290's)].
Point is, the Summit HEI I have (bought new) never fit all the way down on the intake. I have had to run a phenolic spacer and a gasket just to get the dist in contact with the intake and even then is just barely touches and I do not have a lot of engagement of the distributor in the hole in the manifold. I am wondering if I have an internal manifold leak all along due to the intake sitting too low that combined with the eratic distributor timing I have is causing the lack luster performance and poor idle quality. Note - currently have the blue Felpro's in there. Tried the printoseal, but that was a worse fit.
May have been discussed before, but has anyone ran into this, or has anyone ever tried doubling up the intake gaskets to bring the intake up to where it should be. I am thinking maybe 2 of the Mr Gasket composition types may work. I know this is done in industrial applications on a frequent basis.
PS - I still have the 502 on the stand, just don't have the ambition (and interest) in changing everything out to make it work right. If this works out as something as silly as an intake leak all this time - well I will feel rather stupid.
