: Remove old paint or not????

I will be repainting my 67 in the near future and would like some advice on weather or not to remove the old paint before applying new. The car was repainted about 10 years ago from blue to white. There aren't any rust issues, just some dings here and there that I will repair. The blue was factory applied and the white appears to be a lacquor paint, no idea what brand.

So should I remove the white paint or just take the shine off with a 3m pad and do I need to prime the entire car, or only the areas that I have repaired the dings?

I am leaning toward base coat / clear coat and changing the color to red. This is a driver, so no need for a "perfect" car, just a nice paint job for a reasonable cost. I will do all the prep and have a local shop spray the car.

Thanks for your advice.

You might be better off removing as much paint as you can, but not necessarily down to the bare metal. A consideration would be because of excess paint thickness which could leave the paint prone to cracking. Another thing to remember is that back then, alot of cars were painted with laquer from the factory and laquer is being phased out these days, so you might want to use a good primer/sealer. You can go with a urethane enamel over the laquer, but not vise-versa. Have fun. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Your new paint finish will only be as good as what is underneath it.
Old Paint, Is Old Paint.
Keep in mind that stripping the car may open a can of worms.
If you don't want to take the chance of having the project "grow", it may be safer, to just prep and paint, and accept the out come.

I'd have to guess but if your car has only been repainted one time and about 10 years ago with no current rust issues then you must have a very nice solid car. Strip it down and do it right, heck if it's only got two paint jobs and is looking solid after 10 years than it probably is. HMO graemlins/thumbsup.gif
