: Need Help With Plug Wires!!!

Hey folks,

Hope you are all having better luck with your program than I am.

After installing the new engine with the AFR heads, I have one plug wire that I just don't have enough header clearance for. I bought a new set of MSD wires with the multi angle boots, but on that cylinder, the boot touches the header and it doesn't take long before it begins to burn....or melt....or whatever they do. Despite them being "high temp".

So I bought some protective boot covers by DEI. Some sort of high temp mesh stuff that looks and acts like a chineese finger trap. Well, the boot still burns. And I tossed away $20 on those worthless things.

I need a solution here! Help! A 90 degree boot won't clear. I already have the short plugs. I tried to use header wrap, but that stuff is such a pain to install, I gave up. Ever seen the tie wrap things they give you with that stuff? Gads.....
I've seen ceranic boots, but they are HUGE and would never fit.

I also do not wish to pound on the header.......I can't anyway, there isn't room in there to hit it, and I'm not removing the engine to take the damn thing off.....

There has to be some sort of boot cover that actually works. Anyone?

That sucks

What headers are you running? You could built a small sheetmetal cover for that wire.

Hooker 2", BBC in a Nova.
But the headers aren't the problem, the heads are. Exh port is raised a bit....hence the plug comes out right into the tube. We are talking 1/8" clearance.......
I can't blame AFT...they can't possibly buy every BBC header ever made and try them.....

Have you tried header wrap?

I stated that in my post.
PITA that stuff. But maybe I'll try it again....I have a few of their crap tie wraps left..............

On my big block, 2 cyl's were notorious for this and another burnt occassionally. A couple years ago a friend of mine, briefly wrenched for a frozen food co. that had numerous 454 equipped trucks. In their parts inventory were A LOT of MSD wire sets. They were the blue 8mm with adj. straight (bend however above plug tip) and woven heat sleeves. Sets also included extra 90* plug end boots and two different coil wires. A few of these ended up in my garage, I dunno. Anyways, they corrected 1/2 of my problem, I still burned #5. So I acquired some of the individual heat shields that the trucks (my motorhome has them too) have around each boot (retained by exh. bolt). They didn't seem to be applicable, probably due to headers. A little bending and snipping a good part of it away, good to go, haven't burned one since. Good thing, I actually have to buy my next set of wires.
Electrical tape is so unbecoming wrapped around brand new wires.

This could be a good idea...thanks.
I'll check with my buddy who is notorious for scrounging rat motors out of trucks and motorhomes to see if he has any of those factory heat shields lying around.

BTW....# 5 is also my culprit......that tube has to bend around the steering box.
