Currently assembling parts for my 489 I will build this year. I've been debating what crank and rods to use for about a month. Today I finally bought an Eagle crank-4340 forged steel, 4.25" stroke, and Eagle rods-3D H beam 6.385". My question is this: My motor when all said and done will put about between 550-570 hp, and around 600 ft lbs. Did I go overboard with these parts. Eagle rates this crank to 1200+hp and the rods to 850 hp. Could I have gone with the cast crank and I-beam rods and save about $400?? I guess I just feel better having a beefy bottom end. The crank is internally balanced and a 1-piece seal for my GEN VI BBC. so, did I make the right decision or did I just "waste" my money? Appreciate all comments.

I say no, Whats not to say you not going to throught a Super Charger on the year down the road or nitrous oxide i fell you have the right combination i would of gone with the same setup because later when the 500-600 hp starts felling like a honda civic missing 2 spark plugs and i want more horse power i would want to do just week end bolt ons not engine rebuilds & plus you know that if you go down to the track to give your tires a hair cut you can open it all the way up and not having to worry about you snapping your crank or spinning a bearing just get the right parts to go along with it i have seen people use stock oil pans on applications like this and had a big problems

nothing wrong with a bulletproof bottom end.

I am a believer in quality parts. Quality in the long run is often the most cost effective way to go. Break ten cheap tools or buy one top quality one to start with.

I went with a forged crank, pistions and H Beam rods in my 425 HP 383. Nice thing is I don't worry about it coming apart at 5000 rpm. Little cash for a lot of stress reduction = live longer and play longer.

I went w/ the same forged rotating assy' as you for my street 489. The extra $400 spent will be worth it if I decide to go more radical in the future :D .

Forged parts break too,,,I'd say assembly rates right up there at the top, don't know how many passes for sure were on my old motor, stock rods, cast crank, 7-800 passes anyway and was still going strong when it was freshened High 11's,low 12's,,bearings looked like new. RPMS kill anything, currently using a SCAT cast crank in the new motor, but limited to 6k with rev limiter set at 6500. I hope it lasts a while :)
