: Almost Ready to Run
mc71454 Jun 19th, 05, 9:55 PM After degreeing in my cam, it turned out to be 6 degrees advanced even when I installed it on the "straight-up" keyway. I am using the Cloyes Hex-Adjust now and boy was it easy to put the cam where I wanted it. Simply loosened the cam bolts and turned the little hex-adjuster to put the cam 6 degrees retarded from where it was according to the marks on the Timing Gear.....tightened up the cam bolts...literally took about 5 minutes total time, taking it slow and being careful. So much better that pulling the crank gear off and shifting teeth on the top gear like the past.
Degreed it again and presto-change-O dead on "straight up" With this easy way to adjust I will be able to A-B-A Track Test at the next track rental real easy to find where my motor likes it best. NOW I am asking myself - Why didn't I use this setup before ???
So my Cam is Set at 112 LSA and 112 ICL. I will be testing this in 1 or 2 degree increments.
Bob West Jun 19th, 05, 10:20 PM Cool deal, how long before you're back at the track?

Thanks Bob,
A week from Wed for a test and tune. My wife will be out of town at her Aunt's house next Sunday, unless anyone wants to volunteer to babysit my 3 kids (9,5,3) I will have to wait about 10 days from now...It's been this long, whats another 3 days..
Bob West Jun 19th, 05, 10:41 PM It sounds like you have your hands full Tom :). I still have the shifter, exhaust, and add fluid and the th400 will be back in. The top trans bellhousing bolt on the pass. side was a beotch,,trying to get thru the dipstick bracket, shield, transmission into the block, finally got that done after a little break and a few choice words .

Because of the same dilemma you had Bob, I drilled a hole in the trans tunnel, and went to a Lokar trans dipstick (swap meet $5) that mounts to the firewall not the the upper bolt. I took away a little material from the shield around the upper bolts to make it easier to actually get in there. I spray painted it black to make it not so obvious. Grinding Carbon Fiber is also a PIA.
BUT - I really wish someone would give some thought to these things when they are designed..The Lokar trans dipstick tube is so small, it takes Forever to fill the transmission, I have to use a minature tiny little funnel to fit in the tiny filler hole..ridiculous....:clonk:
It reminds of the Newer Disney movies for kids that have to use the words Shutup, stupid, jerk, dummy, idiot...etc. What are those moronic writers thinking ???? it ads nothing to the kids movies except a vocabulary I teach my kids not to say...AGAIN :clonk:

You`ll have to back off the other 7 cylinder`s valve springs to be able to make changes at the track though, you`ll crack the eccentric otherwise. And don`t be surprised if the timing moves on you.
Looking forward to your new best`s..

Tip: buy a "Gotta Show" stainless dipstick. Large ID, much easier to fill than the Lokar. Also uses a factory sealing grommet at the tranny and doesn't leak. I was very happy with mine (replaced a Lokar piece with it.)
mr 4 speed Jun 20th, 05, 6:08 AM Tom,keep us posted..looking forward to hearing of your results
..too bad I didn't live a little closer
GRN69CHV Jun 20th, 05, 6:14 AM Saw a guy do the adustment at the track by turning the crank slight while turning the hex a just nut., that way all the torque is really on the crank, not the valve train.
BillsCamino Jun 20th, 05, 8:28 AM Get 'r done already !!! ;)
10secBu Jun 20th, 05, 9:25 AM That's real good news Tom. Glad to hear your getting the repairs completed. Look forward to hearing how it runs once it's back together.
keep us posted.

That is what I am hoping to be able to do. It shouldn't be too hard, since I can sit inside the engine compartment between the water pump and the radiator :D
Yeah, I know, I have been so busy balancing work, kids, family stuff, yard work, didn't touch the car yesterday. With Fathers day yesterday I just couldn't when all 3 of my kids had a whole bunch of stuff planned out. We took an open car old fashioned trainride yesterday and went to a State Park. They loved it.
