: Plastic Inner Fenders
71blackchevelle Dec 24th, 04, 9:58 AM Anyone tried the new plastic inner fenders that Original Parts Group sells? They are now on sale for $129 for a set of two, original price of $259.
Also, supposedly some Chevelles came with plastic fenders???
Pat_McNeil Dec 24th, 04, 10:34 AM I put mine on last week. They fit much better than you would think a pair of $125.00 inner-fenderwells would. Not to say that they fit perfectly, but just a little bit of "tweaking". I had to "oblong" a couple of holes and use a little heat, but no biggy! I would definitly recommend them at $129.00. Good luck, Pat
BillsCamino Dec 24th, 04, 11:45 AM I did the plastic inner fender "sale" last year at OPG.
Watch the shipping costs...
JohnnieV Dec 24th, 04, 12:02 PM Our 71 had the original plastic inner wells. They were beat up bad, cracks everywhere. The local muscle car shop had the metal replacements in stock,99 bucks a piece. They didn't fit good either but managed to beat to fit.Big improvement under the hood, installed new rubber A arm flaps at extra cost of course. Also good time to change fender badges. have fun -John

71blackchevelle Dec 24th, 04, 12:29 PM OPG (www.opgi.com) has them on sale until 12/31. They are regular 249.95 on sale for 124.95. Also, if you order, ask for the additinal 5% discount, I received a card in the mail for that extra 5%.
Does the plastic look ok compared to the semi-gloss painted underhood black color?
Chirp08 Dec 24th, 04, 1:15 PM my car came with them when i bought it, they are cracked at various stress points and overall dont look to good. If you prep them and paint them with a semigloss paint they look just as good as metal which i have done, but i would never get them, when teh day comes they will be replaced with some nice metal ones.
Nova295 Dec 24th, 04, 1:41 PM my car also came with the plastic inner fenders. The old ones weren't in very good shape so I had to pick up a set of new ones. Went down to OPG a few weeks ago and picked them up but haven't tried to put them on yet.
gab712 Dec 24th, 04, 1:59 PM I have a 70SS. My driver side fender well was plastic and passenger side was metal. A friend has the same set up. He purchased his car from the second owner. Can anyone tell me if plastic was original equipment back in 70 or metal?
Junkyard Dawg Dec 24th, 04, 2:04 PM I would also like to know.
I'm debating on making mine into a hot street/strip car so I want to lighten it...thought plastic inner fenders were the way to go but no?
chevelledude71 Dec 24th, 04, 2:23 PM I had plastic on mine when I bought it. The passenger side was beat up and cracked, the drivers side, looked brand new. I'm currently looking for plastic myself. How much was shipping, and do they sell just one? Thanks
bowtie455 Dec 24th, 04, 3:18 PM my 1973 chevelle came from the factory with plastic fenderwells.
ac72rat Dec 24th, 04, 4:00 PM will crack,,,,,, save your money,,, get METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!
mxracer Dec 25th, 04, 8:10 AM I'm shopping around right now for both inner fenders.the shipping from opg. to va. will cost me dearly.the price is right for the plastic ones though.my 69 came with plastic and are in real bad shape.Ausleys is about a three hour drive for me.they only sell the metal ones 99.00$ each. will be making the trip the first of the year, they said that the quality of the plastic was bad and they choose not to carry them. Tanatra Dec 26th, 04, 11:57 PM Whatever you do, do not use air sockets to tighten them!
BTW, I'd prefer fabricated aluminum fenderwells (the kind fabricated for racing bodies) to the plastic ones if you can find them. They won't look stock, but they'd weigh similar (the weight difference between them & plastic is negligible,) plus they may even look better.
Rumblin70SS Dec 27th, 04, 9:19 AM Glasstek sells the fenderwells in fiberglass if you are so inclined to go that way.
They are a little heavier than the plastic pieces, but are probably lighter than steel ones. Unfortunately I don't have a steel set to compare them to.
I would use these for a street/strip car or street machine, as they are not restoration parts. The nice thing about them is you can finish them the way you like since they are paintable.
Check them out but since they are stiff fiberglass they come truck freight, so you and a couple buddies might want to combine orders to bring the costs down.
Any questions, please feel free to ask!

Hi-po SS 454 Dec 28th, 04, 11:18 PM I find that both plastic and metal where available. Also found out that some cars came with 1 plastic and 1 metal. Sounds like what ever the installer on the line could reach for.
I bought 2 OPG plastic fenders in Oct. This was over the counter, the sales guy, who was the guy Chip Foose redid his 71 Chevelle on that TV show, went to the parts room and brings back 2 plastic inners with scrapes and scratches from storing them 10 ft high on top of each other. I made him take them back and get a set I will accept. He did, took about 10 minutes and he said most had scratches. I wanted mine perfect.
Any way, mail ordering, you will not have this advantage. I would stress over the phone they MUST not have scratches. Installation was not bad, I had to oblong a few holes and redrill one. No big deal. I used on old sheet to cover the inner as I installed it to prevent scratches.
They have little production inperfections but are passable.
bowtie455 Dec 29th, 04, 8:30 PM i guess i got lucky...the 1973 model chevelle i have owned for 22 years has what appears to be the original factory plastic fenderwells and they both have held up fine with no cracks or blemishes.i have noticed the plastic is solid and thick but is also pliable like rubbermaid.i guess because of the softer compound thats why no cracking problems.the manufacturers of the aftermarket fenders that are cracking should be more concerned with their quality than cutting costs to make more profit.
