: gas tank venting and valve cover grommets
afc98 Jun 16th, 05, 8:20 AM I have two questions...the first has been addressed many times here and I have read a bunch of posts on it but I am still confused...on a 1972 Chevelle, can I use just the fuel line and cap off the other lines to the tank, or do I have to use the cannister and the venting system behind the back seat?
The other problem I have pertains to valve cover grommets...I am using stock valve covers and they have one inch grommet holes...supposedly the Chevelles never had one inch holes and all of the grommets I find are for larger holes....I was told this is the original motor (350 two barrel) but I dont know for sure.....does anyone know if I can get one inch pvc and breather grommets anywhere???
Thanks for everyones help to date..first frame off car is coming along nicely and it is all due to the help I have received from this site......
65 El Co Jun 17th, 05, 12:16 AM Best to leave the venting as is if your state has smog checks. As for the grommets. I know I have seen them at Pep Boys or Kragens. Try your local auto parts store. If not, I got mine here. They came with the breather.

RickH Jun 17th, 05, 11:39 AM I removed the cannister and blocked all the lines, except the fuel line, on my 71. It was a problem, because the tank had no way to vent. When I'd remove the gas cap, I could hear the rush of air to fill the vacuum. I replaced the cannister.
afc98 Jun 17th, 05, 2:16 PM Thanks!!!! sounds like I better just leave the cannister in......
nakamura_racing_sports Jun 18th, 05, 5:08 PM Maybe you could disconnect the cannister and leave the line open. Maybe somehow, get a cheap Fram inline fuel filter and put that in the end of the hose, and hide it somewhere in the fenderwell. I know how the cannister can be in the way. Well, it is in my 70, but I left it there. The fuel filter is so that dirt can't find its way into the tank.

I removed my canister last year and just left the line kind of hidden. BUT, I do get a fuel odor when I shut down the engine, not bad and just for a bit. But after reading above I will put a filter at the end of the open hose

I had a similar problem with my valve covers (from a '69 Camaro Z/28). Mine are also 1 inch (NOT the 1.22 inch 'standard' holes) and required a hard to find grommet which I got from Ricks First Generation (www.firstgen.com (http://www.firstgen.com)) Camaro parts. It was made for 67-69 Camaros which seems to be the ONLY 1 inch grommet hole (at least that I could find).

They are only $2.50 each so I would go ahead and buy a couple just in case.
Hope that helps you!

Maybe you could cut the line near the back of the car and put a rubber hose and filter back there, so the gas smell won't bother you.
