I am trying to remove the old tan paint on my 70 steering wheel(stock) which is black underneath. Any suggestions what to use. I tried some old laquer thinner and it didn't make much of a dent removing it. Should I use some paint stripper?

My advice would be that if you cannot remove it with thinner and some elbow grease then I would just leave it on there. Then go to the paint supply house and pick up some interior dye in the correct color and gloss for your wheel. It seems like the tan color you are removing will be suitable to paint over. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I wouldnt use stripper at all!!
If the paint is adhering good to the wheel, use it for the base of the NEW paint.
A perfectly clean surface is a MUST, without it you are wasting time and money.
To start out with I would wash the wheel down with some HOT SOAPY water. Rinse the wheel down with water. Take a GREY scuff pad and scuff the wheel using a NEW bucket of hot soapy water. Once done scuffing rinse with water. If the part is clean it will sheet off the part. If water beads on the surface repeat scuffing with water until the water sheets off!!!
Now you want to chemical clean the part using a plastic cleaner. Since am a PPG fan i like to use SX1004 or SXA1004(spray bomb) plastic prep. Apply with a clean rag and wipe the part in ONE DIRECTION, dont wipe in back in forth motions. Wiping in ONE direction will help prevent any containments from being spread.
So wipe in ONE direction then wipe dry with a new clean rag.
Now its best to spray on a plastic adhesion promotor. PPG makes a few to choose from,DPX801, SX1050 and SXA1050. Id use SXA1050(spray bomb), SX1050 requires a paint gun but the SAME product as SXA1050.
Now for the color. PPG has a real sweet dye system under the Specialty Performance coating line which has color formulas dating back to 60's.
The line is called SC Elastometric colors. Ive used it a few times to do a COMPLETE interior color change on a 02 Chrysler Concorde and 01 Chrysler 300M, stuff is amazing!!
Just apply 2-3 coats over the SXA1050 and you are done...Eric

Is it the stock hard plastic wheel? Easy-Off oven cleaner will safely remove paint from many different types of plastic, believe it or not. I have used this taillight lenses, dash lenses, dash bezels, etc. with excellent results, and no effect on the plastic itself. It will need time (at least overnite) to work. Try it on a small area on the backside if you're not sure. Good luck.
