If you live in Houston, TX I have a guy I recently found that will sugar blast the entire car for 500.00. He will even do it on the weekend. If interested let me know and I will give you the details. My Chevelle is going in July 2nd. and You will be able to see the results at http://maxxom.com/Chevelle.html after it's stripped.

Sounds like that's going to be sticky when it's done.

Sugar is supposed to be less abrassive and won't eat thru the metal. They use it for industrial equipment and it's biodegradable. I will let you know how it turns out.

What is the difference between sugar and other blasting media?

Well since I have been looking for a place to sandblast my car I have found that there are many different "medias" that are used.

Sand is old school and if you have any rust it will split the car wide open since it's so abrasive. Companys have started using walnuts, plastic pellets, sugar, ice, and baking soda.

I don't know which is better but sand is not the way to go with these old cars that may have rust issues.

I have heard that soda blasting is the least abrasive. I will keep you posted on the sugar blasting.

I had to got this route because I do not have the facilities to do it at my home. If you want to find a fair price in your neck of the woods I would suggest calling industrial plants that media blast things. If you call a body shop all they see is $$$$ signs and it will run 1200 & up unless you know someone.

I was thinking the same thing. Sounds like it could make a real mess, especially around here where the humidity is high. How do you clean it after you have blasted it?

It is humid here in Houston. For the price to blast the inside and outside of the car, I think I can figure something out after the fact. I will leave it to the guys who are going to prime it.

I have a dry ice blaster at work I use daily and it will not strip paint. Ask me how I know.

Most blasters use a sand product called Sugar sand because it is so fine. I don't think they will be using real sugar.
But if for some reason they do don't lick the bare metal it will cause more rust.
