Here's my Sean Murphy Induction stage 2 Q-jet, all mounted up. It's a thing of beauty.

How in the heck did you get the electric water temperature sender mounted low enough to clear the upper radiator hose ???????

Good Question :). Only the threaded post of the terminal was sticking up too far, so I removed one of the nuts, and attached the wire at the very base of the terminal, then cut off all the extra post. It stilll touches the hose a little, but I think it'll be fine.

Performer RPM Q Jet intake?

My 1970 malibu(300hp) came with a Q-Jet intake/carb. Is mine a Performer RPM q-Jet? Is that the correct name or do you have something special?

btw nice setup and I like the color of your car! I am painting mine a simiilar color

No you'll have just a standard GM manifold. The Performer RPM is made by Edelbrock. I just painted mine to look more like a stock manifold.

Looks like I'm not the only one to paint my intake (and aftermarket heads).

Looks great!

Because it needs a little Viagra... AKA a @$^@$^ throttle cable bracket that will fit on that intake!

That bracket looks like mine (before I painted it) ... your car wasn't originally a powerglide, was it? Would it be possible for you to snap a closeup pic of the temp sender? I've been trying to figure out how I can do mine, and my Weiand Xcellerator manifold has that port in the same position as yours is.

Yes I had powerglide before. The bracket won't bolt on to the performer RPM. I think I'm going to get the bracket that Edelbrock makes, that also has provision for the kickdown cable for my th350.

About the sending unit... mine came with my Autometer sport comp guage. If you have the same unit, it has a terminal pole sticking out and 2 nuts on it that you connect you sending wire in between. There is a plastic piece at the bottom of the pole the insulates it from the body of the sending unit, which grounds it. What I did was remove one of the nuts and fasten the wire directly above the base of the sending unit, lower on the 'pole' so to speak. Then I could cut off the top of the pole that I wasn't using.
One caveat, don't mess up the plastic on the bottom of the pole or let your wire touch the body of the unit, that grounds it out and your temp guage will just max out and won't read anything. You want the wire to ONLY be in contact with the terminal and not the be grounded. I litte round 'washer' style wire end might be ideal here.
If I can remember tonight I'll try to snap a closer pic of it.

*EDIT* see my next post for a pic. If the locatin on your intake is any taller than mine, it probably still wouldn't work. Mine still touches the radiator hose a little.

Brian,

Beautiful car  I am normally not a big fan of Frost green, but your car looks great. Love the wheels and all the subtle mods you've made. I bet it runs & drives great.

Buy a GM thermostat housing with a threaded fitting for a thermal vacuum switch, and put your temp sender there, that's what I have on my 69.

thanks guys! I should have my fuel line fittings today to connect to the carb... If all goes well (and it hasn't thus far) I'm going to try and take friday off and do the break-in on this bad boy. :D

I considered that ... but they run about $30, and my trips to the pick and pulls are few and far between. Just in case, though, what year and model should I look under for the correct housing?

Sean Murphy actually tried to talk me out of the Q-Jet and recommended a Holley. He said with my engine I may have idle and low speed problems with the Q-Jet and just said set it up as best as you can. The fact that I'm running a stock converter at the moment won't help either I'm sure :(.
Only time will tell if I should have listened, but I insisted on the Q-Jet. It's not a good sign when one of the best Q-Jet gurus around tells you not to run a Q-Jet.

I'll get you the part number off mine when I get home. I'm thinking it was from a mid-80's Caprice with 305, and it was less than $20 from the local Chevy dealer.

About the temp sender, There is usually a pipe plug between the 1, 3 plugs and 6, 8 plugs in the side of the head. That is where I'd put the sender so you don't have to worry about the hose getting in the way. Pluse it is less of an eye sore.
