I am in the process of restoring an all original numbers matching 68 SS convertible car. I have some questions about the paint on the car. On the cowl plate it reads V2, and in the warranty book on the protecto-plate, it reads VV. I understand the V is Sequoia Green. From everything I have read, dark colored cars did not have the black on the bottom. Is this true? And What color cars did not have the black on the bottom? I'm guessing the VV means the car was all green. The question is what is the V2 on the cowl plate? If the car also were to have the D96 stripe, where would I find the information to tell me that?

Thank you to anyone who can help me

V ~ Sequoia Green. 2 letter combos are lower/upper colors - the 2 after the color code signifies the upper color... 2 means BLACK convertible top

http://www.chevellestuff.com/index.htm Go to 1968 Chevelles, then Information N-Z and pick Paint Codes...

My 68 SS Convertible is N2 code. So that means that the color is Cordovan Maroon with a black convertible top. But does that mean that the area below the body side moldings is to be painted same as the Cordovan Maroon or is it to be painted black? I also read where it said that dark colored cars were not painted black underneath the body side moldings.

My 68 Hardtop is also code N Cordovan, Original paint, and it has the black below the mouldings. also black Vinyl top, and White D-96 Stripe.
I didn't see anything on the trim tag in regards to the stripe.
From the pic. obviously, the car needs restoration, but it is an Untouched Original.

Dennis,
I had also read that the white stripe came with that car with a black top.
I see now that is true.
Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure, but I think that the 2 behind the paint letter code just references the black color of the top of the car. It does not mean a black convertible.

Thanks for all your help guys. Also, where does the primaray color stop on the inside of the fender? I have seen many Chevelles painted the same color of the car, and some that were painted black on the inside of the fender at the top (not the fender well).

I have read in 5 different Chevelle books that dark colored cars did not have the black painted on the bottom, but none of the books specified which colors. I have also found that if the car had the D96 stripe on it, the bottom was not painted black, even if the car was a lighter color. That D96 stripe comes in white, black and red. It just depends on which was the primary color. It would only have the D96 stripe and the black on the bottom if the car was manufactured from September 1967 to December 1967. After that, it was one or the other, not both. I would like to know which specific colors were considered dark colors.
