: Installing new package tray on a 70?

We bought a new package tray (for the area behind the back seat below the rear window) and liner for my wife's 70 from Year One. When we got the car, someone had just cut some wood to fit in there and then covered it with black carpet. We wanted to fix that up to look proper again.

I guess I thought it would just be something that slipped into that area -- and maybe tucked under the seat or something. However, now that we have it, I see that it appears to have a lip or "wings" on the sides and such. What is the proper way to install this? Do those lips go up and under the headliner on the sides there? Or maybe down against the side walls?

It looks to me that, no matter what, you'd need to remove the headliner to get this in there -- is that correct?

Now, on a side note, our headliner also needs replacing -- we just haven't bought that yet. So, if it does need to come off, then we'll just wait with the package tray, I guess, and do it all at once...

Ok -- thanks -- I wasn't sure if the sail panels were the same on the '69 as the '70. So, I should be able to remove them without affecting the headliner, correct?

Guess I should do some searching on sail panel removal now. :)

Thanks again.

Remove the pieces in lower corners of the rear window. They're screwed into place. Remove the rear seat. Remove the molding pushed onto the sail panels/headliner. This is the piece that goes all the way from the front window down along the back of the rear side window. You may be able to remove the sail panels by sliding them out. If they're too snug against the side panel, the panel that has the armrest, then remove the window handle and side panel, it's only a few screws holding it in place. Seems I had to remove these panels rather then mutilate the sail panels, not positive.

Place the jute backing down on the metal tray. Bend the sides of the package tray up and while holding the jute in place slide the package tray into place under the metal at the base of the rear window. I used 3M spray adhesive to tack down the vinyl on the fron edge of the package tray.

Reassemble.

I replaced mine and apparently moisture got in the trunk or something...the new one lasted less than a month before bubbling up.

I will buy a plastic one with 6x9 tilted mounts next time

Mine lasted a couple of hours (see the link above and in the parts review forum) Where can you find a plastic one?

Mine cost $16 from NPD, installed it last year and it still looks good. I wouldn't say it's high quality but so far so good.
