I just got a '71 El Camino and today I pulled the dash out so I could get to the instrument panel. I put it back togather and now when you turn the key it just clicks. Any ideas on what the problem is? I'm in a bind cause this is my transportation to work tommorrow. I'm going to hook up a remote start switch and see if it works. I'll check back here in a few minutes to see if anybody has responded. Thanks guys! Well the remote just clicks too. Any ideas?

Have you tried jumping the car? Usually when the solenoid clicks and the starter doesn't turn, it's a weak battery.

Hey John, I recognize you from Team Camaro, my usual site. No haven't tried jumping cause the headlights are bright. I finally gave up last night and figured I'd get a fresh look this morning. I really need to find the problem. I'm missing work this a.m. My Camaro is in the paint shop and this is my only ride right now!

Other things to try is cleaning up the battery cable connections. Also the negative cable connection into the alternator bracket can starter problems. That should be clean and tight.

I cleaned all the connections, no change. If the solenoid just cliicks it's the solenoid/starter right? Like when a solenoid is hot and you can jump it with a screwdriver? The only thing is with the remote switch (which is like jumping it with a screwdriver) it still just clicks. This thing has some wiring issues but under the dash where I was working when this problem started is suprisingly unmolested. I'm ready to pull what's left of my hair out! (wouldn't take long hehe)

Just thinking out loud here...could a missing ground under the dash cause a problem like this?

No. If you have used the screwdriver trick and its still clicks its either, batterys run down, battery cables or battery cable connections, or the starter/ solenoid is bad.

Sort of the same answers you are getting in your other thread. I'll close this one so the answers are all in the same place. Works better that way.
